It is quite possible that this is Carl Rosburg who came to America on 15 Jul 1854 from Brmen to New York. His age was 28 and he was listed as a clothier.

    Charles L. Rosburg

One of the well-know and prominent retired farmers of Remsen is Charles L. Rosburg, who was born at Davenport, on March 1, 1855, the son of Charles H. and Mary (Kart) Rosburg, natives of Holstein, Germany, who continued to live in the land of their nativity until 1854, when they decided to come to America. On their arrival in the United States they came direct to Iowa and located at Davenport. As a young man, Charles H. Rosburg learned the shoemaker's trade and he worked at his trade at Davenport until 1861, when he removed to Benton county, where he continued at his work and later purchased a farm. He developed and improved the place and there engaged in general farming until 1893, when he moved to a farm he had purchased near Sibley, and there he lived until the time of his death in 1895, at the age of eighty-one years. After the death of her husband, Mrs. Rosburg sold the farm and moved to Chandler, Minnesota, where she continued to live until the time of her death in 1912, at the age of eighty-one years. Mr. and Mrs. Rosburg were active members of the Lutheran church, always took much interest in church work and were prominent in the social and religious life of the community, where they were held in the highest regard and esteem by all who knew them. They were the parents of nine children, Charles L., George, Lewis, Bertha, Albert, Herman, John, Henry and Otto, all of whom are now deceased with the exception of Charles L., John and Henry. John Rosburg is a merchant at Newhall, Iowa and Henry Rosburg is retired at Slayton, Minnesota.

Charles L. Rosburg received his education in the public schools of Benton county and grew to manhood on the home farm, where as a young man he assisted his father with the farm work. He remained at home until he was twenty-one years of age, after which for a time he worked for others as a farm hand. On February 28, 1879, he was married to Mary Sagner, who was born in Holstein, Germany, and who came with her parents to America in 1868. The father settled in Benton county, Iowa, where he purchased a farm and where he engaged in general farming and stock raising until 1893, when he moved to Lake Wilson, Minnesota. He later lived with Mr. Rosburg for a short time and there he and his wife died two months apart, in 1905, his death having occurred on June 30 and hers on April 30. Mr. Sagner was one of the well-known and successful men of his county and he and his wife were among the prominent members of the social and the religious life of the district. They were the parents of three children, Fritz and Lizzie, who are living at Lake Wilson, and Mary, the wife of Mr. Rosburg. To Charles L. and Mary Rosburg have been born four children, Louis, Gustave, Ella and Lewis. Louis Rosburg is a farmer at Garretson, South Dakota. Gustave Rosburg, who is engaged in farming on the home place, married Anna Erdman and has one child, Lisle. Ella Rosburg became the wife of Fred Erdman and to them were born three children, Erline, now deceased, Ranville and Merlin. They live at Luverne, Minnesota. Lewis is unmarried and is at home.

Soon after their marriage, Charles L. Rosburg and wife located in Benton county, where Mr. Rosburg engaged in general farming until 1884, when they came to Plymouth county. Here they purchased a farm of one hundred and twenty acres in section 10 of Remsen township. The place at that time was but partly developed and was without improvements. Mr. Rosburg at once built a small house and began the task of developing his farm. He was successful and later increased his holdings to one hundred and sixty acres and improved his place with substantial and modern buildings. He was interested in good horses, Aberdeen Angus cattle and Poland China hogs and became known as one of the substantial farmers and stockmen of the township. Mr. Rosburg always took an active interest in local affairs and for twenty-one years was trustee of his home township and for fifteen years served on the school board, being a member of the board at the time the new school house was built in Remsen. He was always a strong advocate of the best of schools and the highest class of public improvements and devoted the same careful attention to his official duties that he did to his own private affairs. Being a man of ability and excellent judgment, his advice and influence were often sought in matters that pertained to the interest of both the township and the county. For the past three years Mr. Rosburg has been road supervisor of the Remsen township.

In 1909 Charles L. Rosburg and wife retired from the activities of the life on the farm and moved to Remsen, where they built a beautiful two-story, nine-room house, which is modern in every respect. The house is situated on a tract of four acres of land and is regarded as one of the most substantial homes in the city. In addition to their home place they own another residence property, situated on two acres of land in Remsen. Mr. and Mrs. Rosburg had but little financial support when they began life as young married people, yet they were determined to make a home for them-selves and their family. By hard work and close application to business they have risen to positions of honor and influence in their community. They are active members of the German Lutheran church at Remsen and take much interest in church work. They take an active interest in the social and the religious life of the community and have always been interested in the development of the schools of the township and the county. They have been indulgent parents and have given their children good educations. They are among the most hospitable people in the city and are held in the highest regard. Their lives have been well spent and they have accomplished much, not only for themselves and their family, but for the community in general.

    Notes:

Paul Rosburg, one of the most popular and successful farmers in Perry township, was born in Germany on May 25, 1859, being the son of Frederick and Mary (Seitz) Rosburg, both of whom were natives of that country. In 1867 the family decided to come to America, where there were better opportunities for the parents and those dependent upon them. Educated as they were in the schools of Germany, they were taught the strictest economy and industry; thus it was that, when the father and mother left the land of their nativity and the many never-to-be-forgotten scenes of their childhood, they were well prepared, so far as their training was concerned, to care for themselves in the new land. The father, as a young man, learned the wagon-maker's trade, but when he came to the United States and located at Shellburg, Benton county, Iowa, where he died, he followed the occupation of a carpenter.

To Frederick and Mary Rosburg were born the following children: Mary, William, Eula, Adolph and Paul. The mother of these children died many years ago, and after her death the father married Mary Schotle, to whom the following children were born: Charles, Herman, Margaret and Emma. The family were reared in the faith of the German Lutheran church and lived consistent Christian lives.

    Notes:

The German authorities listed Christian as "escaped" when they filed their reports in 1863. It kind of proves the story that they left to avoid conscription into military service.

In 1855 Christian was living in Wisconsin and is on the Wisconsin Territorial Census. In 1860 he is living in Read, Clayton, Iowa with his wife and son, William. By 1870 he is liiving in Luzerne, Benton, Iowa on the lot where his niece would later live with only his wife. He moved the house to Keystone, Benton, Iowa where he appears on the 1880 census. In 1885 he is shown on the Iowa census and in 1893 he is postmaster at Rosburg, Washington.

    Rosburg, Washington
The post office opened in the 1880s after outlying neighbors had tired of the long row to Grays River for mail and appointed representatives to sail to Astoria and request a post office of their own. The mission succeeded, but finding a centrally located postmaster proved difficult. A man named Peter Nelson refused the job, even when bribed by offers to name the post office for him. Finally German immigrant CHRISTIAN ROSBURG agreed, although he had to have the job description translated into German before he understood what was expected.
The 1890s population was large enought to warrant a community hall at ROSBURG, and its Saturday night dances became famous. People living along logging railroad tracks started for ROSBURG by handcar, then rowed and walked - - dress shoes tucked into coat pockets as protection from the mud that is inevitable where rainfall reaches 110 inches a year. Other dancers came as far as they could by fishing boat, then rode by wagon or walked with a latern "listening to see if we could hear a couger or a bear, scared to death."

    Notes:

In 1863 the German authorities listed William as "escaped" when they filled their reports. This lends credence to the family story that the Rosburgs left Germany to evade conscription into the German military.

ROSBURG, WM., proprietor of wagon shop, Luzerne; was born in Germany in 1836 came to Davenport this State, in 1856 remained there ON year, then went to Clayton County, in which county he married Miss Mary Nieland in 1854; they moved to this town in the year 1868, since which time he has been engaged in his present business at this place, Luzerne.
The above from the 1878 Biographical History of Benton County, Iowa.

William Fredrich Rosburg came to the United States when he was 19 and his brother Henry 17. An older brother, Chris, was already living in Davenport, Iowa. William worked in a logging camp at Chippawa, Wisconsin, then at Davenport, Iowa as a wagon maker - a trade he learned in Germany. On October 31, 1863, he married Maria Nieland of Mecklenburg, Germany at Clermont, Iowa, Rev. Skofield officiating. Maria came over in a sail boat when she was but seven years of age. It took 14 days to cross the Atlantic Ocean. During the passage the passengers dipped water from the ocean and would occasinally lose a pail in the rough seas. The captain complained about this, so Maria's brother, Henry, tied a rope around his waist to keep from loosing the pail and was washed overboard and drowned. William was drafted at Giard, Iowa in the fall of 1864, where he had established a wagon makers shop. He served in Com. B 13th Iowa Infantry under German Sherman. H served to the end of the war and told the story that when he was discharged he was so lousy that he bought civilian clothes and threw his uniform into the Mississippi River. Shortly after he returned from the army their little daughter Emma Wilhelmina died and was buried at Giard in 1865 at the age of 14 months. Her tombstone is still standing at Giard, and Grandma Rosburg after forty years was able to see it. They moved from Giard to Blairstown and then to Luzerne, Iowa, Benton County, in 1870, where he operated a wagon shop until 1900.

The shop was torn down then and the material used to build a new home. They celebrated their gold anniversary in 1913 with all the children home for the occasion. He had always hoped to be hauled to the cemetery in an automobile hearse, but due to rain, he was taken by a team to the Lutheran cemetery near Luzerne

William and Maria Rosburg, also raised an orphan girl, whose parents died of dipthereia and left four children who were divided at the grave. Her name was Liesetta Blumke who later married August Grimm of Rutland Iowa.

Wilhelm Rosburg was a lover of Schiller's poems and many of his daughters are named after characters in these poems.

The story has always been told to me how William went kicking and screaming into the Union Army during the Civil War. He was with Sherman on his burning of Atlanta and subsequent march to the sea. Above you have heard Jim Welterlen mentioned the throwing of his army clothes into the Mississippi river. From this you get the impression that his army career was anything, but happy. But, one of his fondest recollections in later years was his helping to burn Atlanta. William became a well respected German leader of his community. When WWI broke out the Germans of the midwest had no desire to send their sons off to fight their uncles and cousins. And so it turned out that the German community of Luzerne came to see William Rosburg. They told him that all he had to do was to say the word and they would not send their sons off to fight in Germany. His response was "I fought for my country once and I would do it again.". That ended the discussion. Quite a turn around for someone who went kicking and screaming into the Union Army.

A COLLECTION OF MEMORIES FROM "OUR FAMILY HISTORY"
    by Laura Maria Rosburg Kouba

My Dad, Wilhelm Fredrich Rosburg, came to America in 1855 when he was 19 years old, with the 17 year old brother, Henry. They had an older brother, Christian, who had come over earlier and lived in Davenport, Iowa. They worked in Davenport awile and then moved to Clayton County, Iowa. Later at Clairemont, Fayette County he met and was married to Maria Nieland on Ocotber 21, 1863 by the Rev. Stockfield.

My Mom, Maria Dorothea Nieland was 7 in 1854 when she came to America with her parents. She said that when the family came to the United States that Grapdpa Nieland's brother went overboard from the ship. The Captain of the ship said that if another person lost a pail while dipping water, he 'halfto' pay. So he tied the rope around himself and it tokk him with it! They never saw anthing of him after that. It took them 14 weeks to cross the Atlantic Ocean. Mary had very little schooling after coming to the United States. She worked for a Lutheran minister's family when she was a little older.

My Dad was drafter into the Union Army on October 5, 1864 (28 years old). He was a member of COmpany B, 13th Regiment of Iowa and was honorably discharged at Louisville, Kentucky on July 21, 1865. He served under General Sherman on the march from Atlanta to the sea! He had just started building a wagon maker shop in Girard, Clayton County, Iowa, when two men came to serve papers on him that he had been drafter to serve in the Civil War.

After the war, Grandpa and Grandma Nieland came to Benton County in a covered wagon. They bought and settled on a farm 2 miles North and 1 1/2 mile East of Luzerne, Iowa.

The oldest child of William and Mary Rosburg, Emma Wilhemine Lisetta, was born August 14, 1864 and died October 1865.

Mother was 40 years old when I was born on February 24, 1887. Mother was 47 years old when esther Augusta was born on July 17, 1894. I was baptized April 8, 1887 (6 weeks old) at the St Paul Lutheran Church in Luzerne by Rev. Philip Studt. His son, Martin, married my sister (Mary) Mayme.

Emil Sr. was baptized in 1887 when he was 10 years old at the "White School" South of Luzerne. Services were held there each Sunday by a travelling 'circuit rider' minister who served several churches.

My Dad's brother, Christian had a general store in Keystone, Iowa. He moved his house from Luzerne to Keystone. (About 6 miles!) In Luzerne, it was located on the lot we built our stucco house. Later both brothers moved West. Christian to the state of Washington where he founded the town of Rosburg. Henry moved to Seattle, King County, Washington, where he raised his family.

William Rosburg had a wagon maker shop in Luzerne from 1870 to 1900 when he retired (at age 64).

On December 12, 1911, William Rosburg, his 10 children, their spouses and grandchildren celebrated his 75th birthday, all coming home for the event. Chas. Rosburg and Wwife, Ella, from Iowa Falls, Iowa. Wm. F. Rosburg, wife and children from Elkton, South Dakota. The rest of the families were from in and around Luzerne. He just had the house wired for electricity so he had all the lights on from cellar to garret. A big day for all.

They also raised a girl, Lisetta Blumke. Her parents both died a few weeks apart of pneumonia. Mother said that they divided the children at the grave of her Mother. (Uncle Martin folks took one also.) Others took one or two. Lisetta married August Grimm and lived and died at Rutland, Iowa.

On October 31, 1913, William and Mary Rosburg celebrated their Golden Wedding anniversary at their home in Luzerne, which they rebuilt in 1900. They had lived there 45 of the 50 years. All the children, son-in-laws, daughter-in-laws and most of the grandchildren were home for the big day. The children presented the Father with a gold-headed cane and the Mother with a gold wedding ring plus a set of Haviland china dishes. They started out in Clayton County, then in Blairstown for a short time, then moved North of Luzerne. In 1868 they finally came to Luzerne where they lived until Mother passed away on July 7, 1927

Mr. Rosburg is a veteran of the civil war and was a member of Co. B. 13th Iowa Infantry, and saw gallant service during the war. For forty-five years he has been a member of the Lutheran church.
The house was decorated in yellow and white and a huge wedding cake, on which were the years, 1869 and 1913, adorned the dining room table. Beautiful yellow chrysanthemums were the flower decoration.

Page 734-35 COMPENDIUM OF HISTORY, REMINISCENCE AND BIOGRAPHY

Conrad Rosburg, for many years the leading carpenter and builder at Osmond, Pierce county, Nebraska, is a native of the province of Holstein, Germany. His birth occurred in the village of Harmsdorf, June 8, 1851, and he is a son of Wolf C. and Sophia (Ehrig) Rosburg. The former was born in 1804, and died in 1872, and the latter was born in 1809, and died in 1900, at the age of ninety-one years.
Men of this family have been tenants of the same place since 1639, the date on the frame and concrete house built and occupied by a Rosburg, and handed down to succeeding generations. At times the race has seemed to be about extinguished, but it has been preserved, and none but men of that name have ever lived in the dwelling.
Conrad Rosburg emigrated to America in 1870, sailing from Hamburg, Germany, on the eighth of June on the "Cymbria," which made the passage to New York in eleven days. He came direct to Benton County, Iowa, whither a brother and two uncles had preceded him. He was employed at farm labor until 1875, when, on March 5, of that year, he rented a farm in Crawford county, Iowa, and for five years followed the plow in that locality. Coming to Nebraska, he rented the Thompson farm, seven miles northwest of where Osmond now stands, and for nine years was a Nebraska farmer, and a successful one at that. It was during his occupancy of this farm that a sad incident occurred in the loss of two children in the memorable blizzard of January 12, 1888.
The season of 1889, Mr. Rosburg spent on the road, traveling through Nebraska for the McCormick Harvester Company, and many are the tales he can tell of jokes and pranks played upon landlords and each other by fellow traveling men at hotels where he has sojourned. The work is exacting during the busy season, but they manage to have some fun along with their labor.
In 1890, Mr. Rosburg erected the first building in Osmond, his present residence, the station having been established that year. For nineteen years he was a leading contractor and builder in Osmond, following that vocation until March, 1909, when he rented a farm near town, and again became one of America's producers. Mr. Rosburg is a good farmer, as the tract he took had been considered a rundown farm. His first crop, after thorough deep plowing, made a showing of fifty bushels of corn to the acre - this from land that had not produced a third of that amount for some years before.
Mr. Rosburg was married, December 22, 1875, at Denison, Iowa, to Miss Hanna Fliss, a native of Cedar county, Iowa, and born near Wilton Junction, a daughter of Tobias and Sophia (Fallburg) Fliss, who were married in Germany in May, 1849. They were natives of Hanover and Brunswick, respectively, the father's birth having occurred near Frankfort-On-The-Main, and the mother's, in the village of Seliz. On coming to America, they lived in Chicago for a time, and, in migrating to Iowa, drove through with an ox team to Bloomington, Iowa, now known as Muscatine, which at that time was but a landing for the river steamers. They settled some twelve miles north of Muscatine, in the edge of Cedar county, and lived here until death.
Six children have been born to Mr. and Mrs. Rosburg, whose names and histories are given herewith: Emma, died in infancy; Otto and Hattie were lost in the memorable blizzard of January 12, 1888; John has been his father's able assistant, both in carpentry and building, and in his farming enterprises; Ella is the wife of Henry Martin, of Osmond; and Hanna Leneve, the youngest of the six children.
Mr. Rosburg is, in general elections, a democrat, but votes for the best man in local campaigns, regardless of party affiliations.
Many were the hardships endured by Mr. and Mrs. Rosburg in coming to Nebraska, and during their first years in the west. For five miles before reaching Onawa, where they crossed the Missouri river, they were compelled to drive through water in some places three to four feet deep. After crossing to Decatur, Nebraska, Mrs. Rosburg rode one of the horses, driving the cattle, and in the flooded road got into a ditch, in which she and the horse were submerged up to her shoulders. During the first few years, their only fuel at times was twisted hay, supplemented with corn stalks, corn or "buffalo chips." They came to Nebraska late enough to escape the last raid of grasshoppers, but were here during the winter of the deep snows, the winter of 1881 and 1882, when the last remnants of drifts lingered in the canyons and ravines until late in May. There were a few antelope to be seen in the country still, and occasionally a big grey wolf would appear, they having strayed out of the timber along the rivers out onto the plains.
These were hard days - days that tried men's souls and women's fortitude. But the persevering ones, like Mr. Rosburg and his family, who endured to the end, have reaped rich rewards for their privations and strenuous labors. The west has been good to those who persevered.

    Charles L.

    Paul Rosburg

Paul Rosburg was but eight years of age when he came with his parents to Benton county, Iowa, where he received his education and grew to manhood. In 1895 he was united in marriage to Marry Saggan and they established their home in Crawford county, where Mr. Rosburg owned a farm. In 1901 he sold his farm in that county and moved to Plymouth county, where he purchased land and at one time owned seven hundred and seventy-six acres. He now lives in section 2 and is engaged in general farming and stock raising, being numbered among the substantial and successful men of the county. The buildings were on the place when Mr. Rosburg purchased the tract, yet he has done much in the way of improvement. His farm is one of the best in the township and is under a high state of cultivation and nicely located.

Mary Saggan Rosburg was born on September 7, 1864, and is the daughter of Hans and Christine (Storjohann) Saggan, who were natives of Denmark, and he was a soldier in the Prussian war. The family came to the United States in 1872, landing at the port of New York, and came at once to Chicago, The year after the devastating fire. Mr. Saggan farmed in Illinois for some years and then came to Iowa, locating in Crawford county. It was there that Paul Rosburg met and married their daughter, Mary, and to this union the following children have been born: Edward, who married Augusta Fester; August, whose wife is Alexandra Zoun; Christine, the wife of Fred Topken; Martin, whose wife is Agnes Curry; Julius; Charles; Marie, the wife of Harry Schindel; Ella, Paul and Anna.

Henry Rosburg takes Own Life at Farm Near Huntington
The community was shocked Monday [May 10, 1937] afternoon when the body of Henry Rosburg was discovered by his sons Jess and Harry and Sheriff Cliff Fredericksen in front of a garage on the Rosburg farm near Huntington with a charge of shot from a single barrel shot gun just over his heart. Death was evidently instantaneous from the self inflicted wound. This was evidenced by the fact that there had been no movement after the gun was discharged.

Mr. Rosburg was a retired farmer and had resided near Huntington for many years. He was well thought of by all who knew him. Last summer he suffered sun stroke and since that time had acted in a peculiar manner at times. Monday was one of those days and in the morning he threatened one of his sons with a gun. Jess and Harry came to town to interview the sheriff. They decided to take him before the insane commission and went to the farm to bring him to the city. There was no one at home at the time of their absence and they arrived at the farm approximately ten minutes after the act had been committed.

Coroner Fred Sternborg was notified but he decided an inquest was not necessary.

Mr. Rosburg is survived by his widow and three sons, Jess, Harry and Herman and two daughters, Mrs. Hagerman and Mrs. Schenck.

Funeral services were held today at 2:30 p.m. at the Huntington church. Burial was in the State Line cemetery. (Estherville Enterprise, Estherville, IA, May 13, 1937)

    Notes:

Her grand daughter, Lucille tells the story about when grandma Martha, was out in the pasture. Eldo, her son, asked for a drink of water. She went to the well and started to pump a drink for him, when the boards gave way and she fell into the well. She managed to stay afloat by hanging onto the pipe going to the pump and then started to yell for help. Eldo was no help, because he was too small, and was more interested in retreiving his hat which fell in when his mom did. The cows were curious at all of the noise, so they gathered around and looked down in the well. Father Henry saw the cows gathered around so he decided he'd better check it out. When he got there he could do nothing because he had no way to get her out. There was a neighbor painting his house nearby who came over to see what the commotion was about. He ran back and got his ladder and lowered it down into the well to get her out.

    Notes:

n my 25th birthday (Feb 24, 1912) Mother, Father, brothers and sisters gave me a surprise and came in the evening to our house on Main Street to celebrate my birthday.

Ester was married to Arthur Welterlen of Edgewood at the Harry Hartung home in Van Horne on Sept. 12, 1917. This was just before Arthur was called into service in World War I.

On New Year's Day 1928 we celebrated our 20th wedding anniversary. Marcella was 8 years old.

On Thursday, March 21, 1929 Emil Rosburg Kouba Jr. was born in Luzerne.

Aunt Rose and Uncle Chrles Van Deusen celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary at their home in Van Horn on January 24, 1934. The next year on the same day we buried Uncle Charles.

We had many family gatherings at the folks house and among their children on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's and special days.

Tow of Emil Kouba Sr's brothers died very young. Joseph was killed accidentally with a shotgun and Karl Paul died wit the measles. Five other infant children died and were buried in Bohemia before they emigrated.

Emil Kouba, our Dad was lost off a load of merchandise while moving from one farm South of Luzerne to another. He was about a year old and when they got to the new place, the man on the wagon noticed that he was missing, so they went back. They found him playing in the snow. He had fallen off the load and was not missed for awhile!

Peter Kouba (Dad's Dad) was a hotel operator in Velka Lhota, Moravia, which in now in CZECHSLOVAKIA. He and his wife, Frances Loyka came to America in 1870. H ewa 27 and she was 35 years old.

The following are some memories Leora Sauerteig had of my Mom, Laura Kouba . . . ERK

In later years when Mom was living in Luzerne by herself after Dad died, almost every week Leora would take her and Meta Buch, a faormer grade school classmate of hers, to Belle Plaine on grocery shopping expeditions. They would sit in the back seat and reminisce on the 4 mile journey there and back while Leora drove them like a chauffeur. Each of the would independently go through the store and then meet again back at Leora's car. One time though, Laura and Meta got back before leora did, so they got in what they though was her car. It turned out to belong to an older gentleman, who was quite surprised to find them there. You can imagine the snickers and giggles that erupted when they realized what they had done, and exited his car very much in a hurry!.

Another time Mom noticed that they were parked on Main street in front of a millinery shop and although she wanted to buy a new hat she was too tired to go in to buy it. Leora offered to go in and bring several out, along with a hand mirror. She found one she liked, so she sent Leora back in the shop with the mirror, the rest of the hats, and a check to pay for the one she selected. Leora said that was quite an unusual shopping spreee for her.

The following from History by Jim Thoma

On January 1, 1908 he (Emil) married Laura Maria Rosburg. Leora was the child of william Fredrich Rosburg and Mary Maria Nieland. The marriage took place at the home of Specer and Amelia (Rosburg) Westinghouse, in Belle Plaine, Iowa, near the Evangelical United Brethren Church. A wedding dinner followed at the Westinghouse home. Amelia was Laura's sister. Laura was born on February 24, 1887 in Luzerne, Iowa. When she was seven years old, her sister Rose was married in the family home. There was a dance in the Rosburg home following the wedding. During the dance, Laura fell against the hard coal stove and burned her arm. Laura attened the Luzerne Lutheran Parochial school and graduated from Belle Plaine High School. She was 5' 6" tall, weighed 175 pounds and had blue eyes. She was a strong person, taking over the family farms and running them with great skill after the death of her husband. She believed in hard work as attested to by one of the many poems that she wrote. "early to bed and early to rize, till you make enough money to do other - wise." She was an avid record and scrapbook keeper. Many of these scrapbooks contain poetry that she wrote throughout her life. She kept record books or journals for almost every day of her life. She kept her sense and mind up until the day of her death. In fact, she finished writing checks on her way to the hospital.

The following is a poem she told us Christmas 1961 - Emil Jr.

I'd like to read to you a poem written by my brother,
who has just graduated with high honors from the county jail.
    and it reads as follows:

He stood at the bar of justice,
    Sober, but with a jag
    He chewed upon a toothpick,
While his lawyers chewed the rag.

They placed on his shoulders many a crime,
So many he back was bent.
For they say he robbed the cheese works,
    And stole out every scent.

Silence! yelled the grey haired judge.
    The court yelled silence too.
    And everyone yelled silence,
    Until silence filled the place.
Then somebody woke the jury up,
With a good hard slap on the face.

"is he guilty or not?", the judge he cried.
    "Guilty!", the foreman said.
And the verdict was that he be hung
    Three times, until he's dead.

"Oh mercy, Oh mercy!", the prisoner cried.
    "See, I'm on my knees".
And a voice cried out, "Vouch, he is innocent!"
And in rolled a case of cheese.

    So never run down limburger.
    Just stop and consider please.
You may never know when you life may be saved.
By a poor little piece of cheese.
