    6. Deacon Joseph "Esquire," b. November 18, 1865, in Amesbury, was a soldier, captured in the Indian attack on Haverhill in 1708, captive for four years; m. December 6, 1717, first Elizabeth Tewkesbury; m. second, Sarah Hoyt, April 27, 1721. He had eleven children. His daughter Mary married her cousin, Josiah Bartlett, signer of the Declaration of Independence.
    7. Hannah, m. John Ordway of Newbury, December 28, 1706.
    8. Samuel, b May, 1689, cordwainer, weaver, miller; m. January 2, 1716, Judith Coffin of Newbury. Will proved November 27, 1749. They had six children.
    9. Deacon Stephen b. Apr 21, 1691, cordwainer; removed to Amesbury; m. December 18, 1712, Hannah Webster of Salisbury, who d. January 15, 1768; he d. April 10, 1773. Their eighth child was Josiah Bartlett, "physician," signer of the Declaration of Independence.
    10. Josiah, weaver, m. April 13, 1725, his cousin Elizabeth Bartlett (John) will proved September 15, 1746. He bequeathed twenty pounds to the Third Church; she bequeathed a sliver tankard. No Children.

    Captain John Ordway born in Newbury, Massachussets 17 Nov 1658, died there w Feb 1717/1718, in his sixtieth year. He married in Newbury, 5 Dec 1681, Mary Godfrey, born in Newbury, 23 Jan 1661, died there 12 Aug 1725, daughter of Peter and Mary (Browne) Godfrey.

    John Ordway was a weaver in Newbury. He was successively Sergeant, Lieutenant, and Captain of the military company there. In 1678, he, aged twenty years, took the oath of allegiance in Newbury with his father, aged sixty, and his brother James Jr., aged twenty six. He bought much land and was evidently a man of substance. He was the only son of James who left a daughter Anne of the proper age to be the wife of John Coffin, whom she married about six months after her father's death.

    When John Ordway was to be married to Mary Godfrey the fathers of the two young people each provided land for them. The custom was in those days to see that each young couple starting out in life had sufficient land to cultivate for a living and sufficient household plenishing to make a home.

    "Know ye that I James Ordway Malster in Newbury .... for ye Naturall Love & true afection that I doe beare unto my Son John Ordway of ye Alfores Towne ... doe give a .... parcell of land scituated in ... Newbury being ... Twenty acres ... This seventh day of December ... One thousand Six hundred Eighty & one ..." Witnesses: John Swett, Joseph Bayley.

    Richard (2), third son of Richard (1) Bartlett, was born October 31, 1621, probably in England, and died in Newbury, Massachusetts, 1698, his will, dated April 19, 1695, being proved July 18, 1698. He was a shoemaker, cordwainer and yeoman, and lived at first at Oldtown in Newbury, removing to Bartlett's Corner near Deer Island, at the Merrimac River. He is said to have been "a facetious and intelligent man"; he subscribed to the oath of allegiance at Newbury in 1678 and was for several years a deputy to the general court. He married Abigail, who died March 8, 1686. His children, born in Newbury, were: 1. Samuel, born February 20, 1645, died May 15, 1732; married, May 23, 1671, Elizabeth Titcomb. 2. Richard, born February 21. 1648, died April 17, 1724; married, November 18, 1673, Hannah Emery. 3. Thomas, born September 7, 1650, died April 6, 1689; married, November 21, 1685, Tirza Titcomb. 4.     The Testimony of William Titcombe & Anthony Somersby concerning the last will and testament of Richard Bartlett, Sr. of New bury deceased the 20th of Mary 1647. About a Newbury deceased) three acres of upland adjoining to this house, & but if she died & then to my three daughters Abigail, Hannah and Rebecca Bartlett.
    Item I give to my three daughters (above named) I give my dwelling house and barn and orchard and land adjoining about 12 acres; also one freehold in the commons of New bury, purchysed of Mr. Henry Sewell of Newbury & also several lots of land specified.
    Item My will is & I do hereby apoint my three daughters namely Abigael Bartlett, Hannah Bartlett, & Rebecca Bartlett to be executors of this mye last will and testament, giving and bequeathing the beside what I have formerly given them, all the rest of my estate not mentioned in this My will, whither debts due to me bye bill fond booke, or otherwise or whatever may heer after appear to be mine my debts & funnerall charges being by them discharged.
    Lastly I do appoint Tristram Coffin Esq. & my Cosen [a brother's child] John Bartlett and my three sons afore named as overseers to advise my Exectr in the Management of the trust committed to them in this my last will & testament. Heerby renouncing all former wils of mine.

Whereas it hath pleased his most excellent Majesty, our gracious king, by his letter bearing date, the twenty-seventh of April, 1678; to signify his Royall pleasure, That the Authority of this his Colony of Massachusetts in New England, do give forth Orders, that the Oath of Allegiance, as it is by Law established within his Kingdom of England, be administered and taken, by all his subjects within this Colony, who are of years to take an oath.

    Daniel Ela depsoed that he heard John 'Godfray' say the he abided in Haverhill, and that his residence was at Thomas Lilford's house (Thomas Linfurth). Also deponents knew that he had spent much of his time in Haverhill since he was last in prison at Boston. Further, hearing a report that Godfray resided at Newbery at the house of said Peter 'Godfray', deponent went there and inquired of said Peter and his wife, who told him that John lived at Haverhill. John Griffing testified the same, and also being the marshal general's deputy, etc.. Sworn, June 24th, 1671.

    Peter Godfrey, aged about forty years, Thomas Lowle, aged about twenty years, deposed June 15th, 1671, that Peter Tappan and Jane his wife, being in discourse with their father and mother and brother Jacob Tappan, accused them; 5th June, 1671, etc.. Abraham Tappan vs. Peter Tappan and Jane, his wife. Slander or defamation, in saying that Abraham, his father, with his mother and brother Jacob, had sold and killed many sheep that were not their own. Which words were spoken with arrogancy, tending to make his father and mother, liars and thieves.

    Verdict for the plaintiff John Godfrey. Forfeiture of a Bond moderated from 60£ in wheat, to 45£ to be paid in wheat at 5 shillings per bushel. Bond dated Feb. 17, 1664 given by George Corlis of Haverhill, to John Godfrey of Ipswich, 15£, 18 shillings, and 70 bushels of wheat at 5 shillings per bushel; to be delivered at Carlton's landing place in Haverhill. Witness: Antony Somerby *__ and Peter Godfrey *__ , who made oath, June 17, 1672, before Daniel Denison.
