    A widely known Dubuque musician, he was fatally injured early Sunday morning in an automobile accident near Grinnell, Ia.

    DUBUQUER DIES ON 'DEADLIEST ROAD IN STATE'
    Fatally injured in an automobile accident on "the deadliest road in the state," Robert Russell Roedell, 24-year-old Dubuquer, died early Sunday morning at St. Francis Hospital at Grinnell, Ia.

    The body was brought to Dubuque Sunday afternoon. Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Tuesday afternoon at the University of Dubuque college chapel with Dr. Dale D. Welch, university president, officiating. Burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.

    Graduated With Mother

    Roedell was graduated from the university in June, 1937, where he was prominent in musical circles. His mother, Mrs. Minna Scheulter [sic] Roedell, received her degree at the same time in a mother-and-son graduation. Mrs. Roedell, who survives, is librarian at the Jefferson Junior High School and lives at 2665 White Street.

    At the time of his death Roedell was a music instructor at the Liscombe, Ia. high school.

    Missed Turn

    Roedell was killed and a companion seriously injured when an automobile driven by Roedell missed a turn at the junction of highways 6 and 163, eight miles east of Grinnell.

    The car, traveling at high speed, hit a ditch and rolled for more than 150 feet. Roedell's chest was crushed and a lung punctured, causing him to die of an internal hemorrhage.

    Roedell's companion, Kenneth Koehler, a Liscombe, Ia. insurance man, will recover, physicians said, although he suffered numerous painful injuries. His tongue was ripped almost from his mouth.

    The Roedell death is the fifth on Highway 6 in Poweshiek Co. this year, and has earned the highway title of "the deadliest road in the state."

    Two persons witnessed the tragedy: Charles Wilson and G. D. Griffith, both of Malcom, Ia. Roedell was returning from Fairfield, Ia., where he had gone to apply for the post of director of music at the Fairfield High School, where [sic] the tragic accident occurred.

    He was born in Fulton, Ill., on Feb. 11, 1914.

    At the university he was an active leader in music work and a popular student. He was a member of the a capella choir, serving as assistant director to Dr. Noel J. Logan. He played in the band and orchestra, was a member of the university's male quartet, and appeared as a baritone soloist both on the campus and in the city. He was also active in church music circles.

    He was appointed director of music at Liscombe High School in September, 1937.

    Alfred T. Roedell, prominent local musician, died at his home, 2665 White street, Friday evening at 9:45 o'clock following a lingering illness. The funeral services will be held at the home Monday afternoon at 3:30 o'clock. Interment will be made in Linwood cemetery and the services at the grave will be private. Mr. Roedell was born in Dubuque July 18, 1880, and had spent his lifetime in this city. He was prominent in musical circles here for many years and was the organizer and director of the Roedell orchestra, which was one of the best known musical organization here years ago. He was married to Miss Minna Schuelter. To this union was born two sons. His widow and one son, Robert Russell at home, survive. One sister and three brothers also survive; Mrs. Alex Duccini; F.G., R.C. and R.P. Roedell, all of Dubuque. He was a member of the Court of Honor, Lodge No. 82; Woodman of the World, Columbia camp, No. 78, and A. F. of M. No. 289. One son and his parents preceded him in death.

    RETIRED TEACHER FOUND DEAD OF BURNS IN APARTMENT
    The body of a retired Dubuque school teacher, who apparently died of burns received when her nightgown caught fire, was found in her apartment Sunday night by police. The police were called by relatives when they could not enter the house.
    She was Mrs. Minna Roedell, 73, 2665 White St., who, according to neighbors, had not been seen since Wednesday.
    Dr. Clarence Darrow, Dubuque Co. coroner, said she may have been dead since that time. He said she died of third degree burns.
    Reconstructing the tragedy, Dr. Darrow said her nightgown may have been ignited when she struck a match to light a cigarette.Shreds of her gown were found in a pail of water in which she attempted to douse the flames before she collapsed and died.
    Relatives from Cuba City, Wis., called the police when they failed to get an answer to their knocks on the door.
    Friends may call at the Haudenshield Funeral Home, 2170 Central Ave., where services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday. The Rev. Harold Thomas, of the First Baptist Church, will officiate, burial will be in Linwood Cemetery.
    Mrs. Roedell, widow of Alfred Roedell, was born March 8, 1884, near Cassville, Wis.

    She taught in Wisconsin schools from 1902 to 1908, after which she moved to Dubuque, teaching here from 1924 to 1951. She retired June 1, 1951, as librarian at Jefferson Junior High School.
    She was a member of the First Baptist Church.
    Surviving are a brother, Fred B. Schuelter, Des Moines, and two sisters, Mrs. Anna Hoffman, St. Paul, Minn., and Mrs. Oscar Slaght, Hazel Green, Wis. Her husband died April 29, 1927.

    Robert T. Roedell, 73, died at Finley hospital Friday morning at 3 o'clock. The body has been taken to the home of his son, R. P. Roedell, 264 Hill Street.

    Funeral services are to be conducted at the Walton and Schroeder chapels Sunday afternoon at an hour to be announced later. Burial be made in the Linwood Cemetery.

    Mr. Roedell was born in Quincy, Illinois October 15, 1852 and has been a resident of Dubuque for the past forty years. He was a painter by trade. He is survived by four sons, F. G., R. C., R. P. and A. T. Roedelll all of Dubuque, and one daughter, Mrs. Alex Duccuni, Dubuque.

    Mrs. Bella T. Roedell passed away at the family resident at 508 West Locust Street this morning at 8 o'clock. She was born in England Feb. 22, 1853, and had resided in Dubuque for many years.
    She was prominent in various organizations being a recorder for the court of Honor and Royal Neighbor Lodges and a member of the Orioles, the Maccabees and the Women's Relief Corps. No. 37.

He was a mason employing four men. Living with him was his sister Maria Jane Perrot and his cousin, Jane Perrot (daughter of William and Sarah nee' Fear McQuigg). In 1861 he was living in Shepton Mallet on Leg Street and was a builder employing 3 men and 3 boys. In 1871 he was living in Wedmore, Somerset, England evidently waiting to leave for the United States. His occupation was listed as master builder.

    Came to the United States to Dyersville, Iowa in 1872. Both Cornelius and Phoebe Ann were born in Shepton-Mallet, Somerset Shire, England. From the obituary of Kristen Watts: Cornelius Perrott was born in Lydford, Somerset Shire, England and died in Schaller, Iowa. Buried in Schaller Cemetery. Cornelius married Phoebe in Bristol, England. They came to the U.S. in 1872 settline in Independence, Iowa for a year then Dyersville.
