April 1655. in Baccalaureum.

    The English translation:

Stephen Thomæ, my blessed father, [first] saw the daylight in Hildburghausen on St Bartholomew's Day [24 August] 1629. The parents were Mr. Christopher Thomæ, in the beginning Cantor of this place, and at the end Subdeacon and afterwards Archdeacon [also] of this place, who in 1634 fell into blessed sleep in the LORD, and wife Catharina, born Hartmannin. He frequented under the late military troubles the school of this place in the beginning, and went at the same time to his stepfather Johann Möringen in his office as a Kirchner [church's administrative assistant], as well as to the baker’s shop, working by the hand, until he in 1646 went to Coburg for the Great Princely Gymnasium, and passed the time at that place at the dorms [Convictorio] and in the classrooms [famulatur] in misery. Finally he went to Leipzig, apprenticed 1652 under Mr. M. Rothen de Sorite, and received his baccalaurate on 21 April 1655. As he informed the oldest sons, he was after his homecoming employed for a long time by the distinguished House of Carpzov and [then] received the call 1663 as the pastor of Wiesenfeld, (15 Jul) 1668 as the pastor of Neuhauß, and finally 1678 as the adjutant of Sonnefeld, where he died on 22 July 1706 in the 77th Year of his age, still full of life, of a palsy, and was buried at the Klosterkirche. Also at the same place, the gentle reader will find that, after his death, I made the memorial in his honor. Of him it is here in print: [Actually, Christian listed three people who were buried with his father.]

Stephen Thomä, was the 14th Evangelical pastor of Sonnefeld, and he also succeeded the late Johann Lorenz Hoffman (who had died in 1677 at the ripe old age of 46) as the Adjunctus of the same town.

[page 359] 14. Stephan Thomæ, of Hildburghausen, born 1629, studied in Coburg and Leipzig, was pastor first of Weisenfeld 1663, then of [page 360] Neuhaus 1668, finally Adjunctus of this place [Sonnefeld] 1678, died blessed 1706, was buried on 22 July in the Klosterkirche. His memorial tablet had this inscription:

“Here rests, weakened by old age and exhausted by [so] much work, the bones of a faithful Servant of GOD, namely Mr Stephen Thomæ from Hildburghausen well-trained theologian and well-deserved Adjunctus of this place [Sonnefeld]. This man of GOD’s fruits, loyal officer, and pastor's pastor, GOD rewarded [his] virtues with three crowns, two he wore in this mortality, with the third he shines now in eternity, after he had lived [for] 77 [years], led in Weisenfeld 5 [years], Neuhaus 10 [years], Sonnefeld 28 [years], altogether 43 [years], and been in the marriage for 41 years. Died blessed 1707.”

Of his family and writings more information is given by his minister son, Rev. Thomæ and see Licht p. 719.

    From "Licht am Abend"

Johann Christian Thomæ was born in the house of his grandfather in Heldburg on 5 April 1668. The father was Rev. Stephan Thomæ, formerly Pastor of Weisenfeld, later of Neuhaus, and finally Adjunctus of Sonnefeld. The mother Madame Cordula, daughter of Michael Buchenröder, Superintendent of Heldburg. After he was privately educated by Rev. Joh. Martin Seifert, now Pastor of Steinach, Rev. Georg Möring, now Third Class of [the Collegiate School of] Neustadt an der Aisch, Rev. Georgio Kochen, then Pastor of the Holy Cross in Coburg, now deceased, he came in late May 1679 to Coburg for the Primary Class [at the Collegiate School] and was promoted 1682 to the Great Princely Gymnasium. After he matriculated 1686 at the bottom of his class [de paupertate studio forum = Latin, “of the poverty of the study of the form”], he entered on 14 May 1688 the University of Jena. In the year 1697, on 25 February, he received a Vocation to the Rectory of this place [Neustadt an der Aisch], on 3 March, his pastor's uniform, and began the 5th of that month his work in the name of GOD. The Monday after Misericordia Sunday [15 or 22 April 1697], he was installed as the Cantor of the Spiritual Lower Court in the presence of the entire Collegiate Council, however has led his office for almost a fourth of a generation hopefully not without blessing, and it appears that he is consumed in this work as a light in the service of GOD, and yet taken without none of his predecessors dead in office, whom he would first make as a rule, “and the rectory makes a mortal immortal [Rectoratum hactenus immortalem mortalem].“ In print, he has (1) made in the honor of his blessed father Rev. Stephan Thomæ, and 1707 set the memorial, (2) published in 1720, Den in der Augen der Welt unglück seelige, in GOttes Augen höchst=seel. Zustand eines truen Schulmanns [The in the Eyes of the World tragically dead, in the Eyes of GOD most blessed State of a true Schoolmaster], a pamphlet for the funeral of the Kirchner, Rev. Eyring, and (3) this present work.

The English translation of Thilo Krieg’s biography of Johann Christian Thomæ:

    47.  T h o m a e , Johann Christian, historian and biographer
    ( 1668 – 1724 ).
On 2 November 1717, an “Actus oratorius” [ oratorical ] took place in Neustadt to celebrate the “Jubilaeum Lutheranum Secundum” [ Luther Bicentennial ], designed by the rector of the town school Johann Christian Thomae.  Among other things, in the church, a number of boys were told about the life and deeds of Luther to his death and burial.  This process — as reported by Albrecht Meno Verpoorten, the then superintendent of Neustadt, in the preface to Thomae's Licht im Abend [ “Light in the Evening” ] — prompted good friends to propose that the speeches should be published with explanations.  In this way, as Verpoorten continues, especially since there were not any particular accounts about the Reformation in Coburg, in Thomae the idea of “collecting the information about churches and schools, which are available since the Reformation, as much as possible, and thus to preserve the same against destruction or oblivion, and to facilitate the same work for the descendants [ die noch bey Handen habende Nachrichten von Kirchen und Schulen, seit der Reformation, so viel thunlich, zu samlen, mithin dieselbe vor gäntzlicher Zernichtung oder Vergessenheit desto eher zu bewahren, und den Nachkommen dergleichen Arbeit zu erleichtern ].”  “It seems to me”, writes the Rector himself, “as an irresponsible impertinence against God, if we did not endeavor to preserve the blessings of our leaders, who have now been announcing the Word of God to us for two hundred years [ Mir kam es, als eine unverantwortliche Undanckbarheit gegen Gott vor, wenn wir nicht das Andencken unserer Lehrer, die uns nun zwenhundert Jahr das Wort Gottes verkündiget, im Segen zu erhalten uns bemühen wollten ].”  The will turned into action, and a work came to light, which was at the core of a description of the lives of the Evangelical preachers and city schools and colleges in the Principality of Coburg, as well as yielding a rich trove to the friends of history as well as explorers of biography, and whose value as a reference will not fade away.

The outer life of Johann Christian Thomaes lacks remarkable experiences.  In the house of his grandfather, the superintendent Buchenröder, he was born in Heldburg in 1668 ( 5 April ).  His father, Stephan Thomae, was a pastor in Wiesenfeld, on his maternal side he could trace the family tree back to the Coburger Superintendent Dr. Maximilian Mörlin.  A student at the Casimirianum in Coburg from 1682, he went to Jena in 1688 and followed his call as a rector to Neustadt in 1697.  As for his activities as a teacher, we learn from the description of one's life, written by General-Superintendent Erdmann Rudolph Fischer.  In 1701, Fischer went to the school in Neustadt.  “Everywhere I go,” he continues, “I have enjoyed the faithful teaching of the frail but skillful and untroubled Rector, Johann Christian Thomae, of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, to my great benefit [ Allwo ich, des treuen Unterrichts des, dem Leibe nach gebrechlichen, aber sehr geschickten und unverdrossenen Rectoris, Herrn Johann Christian Thomae im Lateinischen, Griechischen und Hebraeischen, zu meinem großen Nutzen genossen ].”  A lengthy stay of the Rector in the sickbed caused this schoolmaster to retire from Neustadt earlier than he wanted.  “For under Him,” he adds, “I could have done so much more [ Denn unter ihm, hätte ich noch vieles vor mich bringen können ].”  In the Rectory, Thomae died, almost fifty-six, in 1724 ( 19 March ).

    Notes:

I'm glad to hear that, even though your eyes are getting bleary from slogging through "Licht am Abend", you're as happy as a bug in a rug. Well, you'll be happy to know that I have finished the English translation of the biography of Stephen Thomas Thomä. As a cradle Catholic, I'm not familiar with the Reformation terminology so it took me a while to figure out what the heck did Rev. Christian Thomä meant by this and that. So that's what he meant when he wrote that Father "informed the oldest sons"! He was actually home-schooling them, including Stephen Thomas. "Convictorio" was a term used to describe a pastor's assignment and service. Johann Christian Thomä's biography is two pages long so it'll take a while to translate it into English.

But, first, a couple of words - As you probably know from my English translation of the Hildburghausen timetable, the Church of St Lorenz was the main church of the town but it was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1779. "U.L. Frauen" is the holdover from the Catholic past of Hildburghausen. It's short for "Unsere Liebe Frauen", German for "Our Blessed Lady", who is of course the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. But this church doesn't exist anymore, too. They were both replaced by the present Evangelical Churches - the Christus and the Neustadter - and the Catholic Church of St Leopold.

And how the feature presentation . . .

    The original German version:

    The English translation:

Stephan Thomas Thomæ, the son of Rev. Stephan Thomæ, Adjunctus of Sonnefeld, und Madame Cordula, born Buchenröder, was born on 27 May 1679. He benefited from the education at his father's house for a very long time until he could go 1696 to the Coburg Gymnasium. At this place, he matriculated, because he had gone off to the service [Convictorio, as the personal chaplain] of the Carpzov brothers [literally, "Brotherhood”] for a few years, 1699 de laude Carpzoviana [Latin, “In Praise of Everything Carpzov”]. In the year 1700 he went to the University of Jena, then 1702 to Erfurt, and further to Berlin, where he learned for 2 years altogether. In 1706, he went into the service [Convictorio, as military chaplain] of Obristwachtmeister [Major] von Glasungen in Hartmansdorf, not far from Frankfurt on the Oder. Here he would remain until 1712, when he returned to his native land and stayed in the service of Obristwachtmeister [Major] von Bölderndorff in Zickelsdorf, until he was called on 19 January 1722 by the Council of Great Nobles as the Præceptor [Supervisor] of the Seventh Class in this school [The Collegiate School of Coburg].

His mother was living with him after his father died in 1690 and until his mother’s death in 1703. She was buried in Hildburghausen.

The German transcription of Johann Tobias Mohring’s baptismal record is not finished but it’s already clear that he was baptized by his father, the Reverend Johann Anton Mohring, with three godfathers — the Reverend Tobias Durrfeld, the Pastor ( 1660 – 1668 ) of Nordheim im Grabfeld ( now Nordheim vor der Rhön, 11.6 miles northwest of Rappershausen and 24.2 miles west of Hildburghausen ), the Reverend Kilian Seifert, the Pastor of Bedheim ( for 38 years, 1638 – 1676, 4.2 miles southwest of Hildburghausen ), and the Reverend Johann Langenstätter, the Rector of the Evangelical School of Zerbst ( 121.5 miles northeast of Hildburghausen ).

I stayed up all night reading about these esteemed men.  The two Pastors both have biographies at Google Books.  Rev. Seifert is in the Krauss and Thomä books but he’s also in a book about German Evangelical hymnals because, for his last illness, he had songs sung to him from his church’s hymnals.  But you may be much more interested in Rev. Langenstätter.  It’s not because, in 1668, he published a memorial about his late Lord and Master, Johannes VI, the Sovereign Prince of Anhalt-Zerbst ( the great grandfather of Catherine the Great, the Empress of Russia, and the great-great grandfather of King George III, who lost the American Colonies ).  It’s because he was one of your Klippers.  He was the son of Anna Nothnagel and her husband Pankratius Langenstätter, the grandson of Christoph Nothnagel and his wife Afra Klipper, and the great grandson of Conrad Klipper, the shoemaker of Hildburghausen.

    Notes:

I must’ve pulled too many muscles in my brain while I was trying to decipher the lines about Johann Friedrich Headerich.  When I finished the translation, I forgot that, in 1674, Stephan Thomae had already been the pastor of Neuhaus-Schierschnitz ( not Neuhaus am Rennweg! ) for six years, since 1668, and that he was not transferred to Sonnefeld until 1678 — four years later.  So he wasn’t new to Neuhaus-Schierschnitz.  The following translation should have read :

    The English translation :

On the 14th of June [ 1674 ] Sunday, Fest Day of the Trinity 9. Mr Christian Röder, currently District Administrator of this place of Neuhaus [ -Schierschnitz ], a young son is baptized, baptismal witnesses and Godparents were :  the most worshipful and most worthy Mr Johann Friedrich Henderich, in the office of the Temporary Administrative District Officer of Sonnefeld, 2. Mr Johann-Georg Beyers, Town Council member and draper in Coburg, and 3. Frau Cordula Thomaßin, born Buchenröder, the wife of the present pastor of this place, Stephan Thomae.
The child will have the name of Johann Friedrich.

P.S.  In 1674 ( not 1574 ), Ernst I the Pious, the Duke of Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg, was still the sovereign of Neuhaus-Schierschnitz ( in the District of Sonneberg ) but he died on 26 March 1675.  His oldest surviving son succeeded him as Friedrich I, the Duke of Saxe-Gotha and Altenburg.  The old Duchy of Saxe-Coburg belonged to him at that time but, in 1680, it was transferred to his oldest surviving brother, Albrecht.
