George Soule was an indentured servant and passenger on the Mayflower's 1620 voyage to the New World. He was also a signer of the Mayflower Compact.

The emigrant ancestor went across in 1620 the Mayflower as "servant" to Edward Winslow and therefore his voyage to Plymouth was in a business, not a religious, relation to the expedition. In other words, as an indentured servant he was not technically and legally a free agent, but was obligated to go with his employer. He signed the Mayflower Compact. George settled at Duxbury where most of his children remained, but in 1658 he gave land jointly to his sons Nathaniel and George at Acoaxet, Acushnet and Apponaganset (later Dartmouth), where they settled and left many descendants, most of whom by mid-eighteenth century adopted the spelling Sowle which characterizes this branch. Other variants, however, especially Sole, were used.

Will of George Soule written on 11 Aug 1677, Probated 1 February 1680, Duxbury, Plymouth, Massachusetts:

George Soule's origins in England have not been discovered. The most promising record found to date is the baptism of a George Soule on 9 February 1595 at Tingrith, Bedford, son of William. However, recent DNA testing has now shown this Bedfordshire Soule family was not the direct ancestor of George Soule. Other Soule families using the name George can also be found in many other places counties across England in the 16th and 17th centuries. DNA testing has eliminated the predominant Soule families of Gloucester, Worcester, East and West Sussex, and Bedford. Louise Throop has published a reasonable hypothesis that George Soule may have been descendant of the Sol family of Leiden, who were involved in the printing press.

George Soule came on the Mayflower as a servant to the Edward Winslow family, indicating he was under 25 years old at the time; however, he did sign the "Mayflower Compact," suggesting he was over 18. This puts his birth year at around 1595-1602. This matches well with his apparent marriage date of around 1625 at Plymouth: by the May 1627 Division of Cattle, he was married to Mary [Beckett], and they had had one son, Zachariah.

George Soule and family moved to Duxbury very early on, and he was a deputy to the Plymouth Court for a number of years beginning in 1642. He had volunteered for the Pequot War of 1637, but Plymouth's troops were not needed. He was on various committees, juries, and survey teams, during his life in Duxbury. In 1646, for example, he was appointed to the committee to deal with Duxbury's problem of the disorderly smoking of tobacco.

George Soule made out his will on 11 August 1677, and added a codicil to it on 20 September 1677. The codicil is quite interesting as it gives a little insight into a family squabble between son John and daughter Patience:

If my son John Soule above-named or his heirs or assigns or any of them shall at any time disturb my daughter Patience or her heirs or assigns or any of them in peaceable possession or enjoyment of the lands I have given her at Nemasket alias Middleboro and recover the same from her or her heirs or assigns or any of them; that then my gift to my son John Soule shall be void; and that then my will is my daughter Patience shall have all my lands at Duxbury and she shall be my sole executrix of this my last will and testament and enter into my housing lands and meadows at Duxbury.

Gave his son, John Soule of Middleboro, 100 acres in the "Twenty-Six-Men's Purchase" in Middleboro, being the 22nd lot of the last division of Upland in said purchase
For Oe6-6, sold his son, James Soule, 25 acres in the Twenty-Six-Men's purchase, being the 15th lot and butteth upon ye great river
In a deposition dated 8 March 1705/6, John Soule swore he was "about Seventy foure years" of age.
He married (2) probably in Duxbury circa 1678 Esther (Nash) Sampson, Born 6 March 1640 (if age a deathe is correct); died Duxbury 12 September 1735 age 95 years 6 months and 6 days; her parentage is unknown. She married (1) circa 1679 Samuel Sampson by whom she had Samuel and Ichabod.
The undated (prob. 1678) settlement of the estate of Samuel Sampson mentions the widow Easter Sampson "is towards marriage with John Soule."
On 5 March 1683/4 Samuel Sampson, son of Sammuell Sampson, deceased, chose John Soule to be his guardian.

John Soule died intestate and Esther Soul, widow, was appointed to administer his estate 14 November 1707. His three daughters or their heirs proposed division of the residuary real estate among them since their father "in his lifetime settled all his sons portions in land by deed" and they, the daughters, received but one cow. The settlement of 6 March 1707/8 was signed by John and Rachel Cobb, Esmond and Rebecca Weston and Adam Wright on behalf of his children born to his wife, Sarah deceased.

4 March 1673/4 fathered a child with an unnamed Indian woman and ordered to pay ten bushels of corn to her for the keeping of the child.

Nathaniel was born between 1634 and 1646 and died in Dartmouth before 12 October 1699. He married Rose Thorn by 1680 and had five children.

Nathaniel may have caused the most colony trouble of any of his siblings. On 5 March 1667/8, he made an appearance in Plymouth court to "answer for his abusing of Mr. John Holmes, teacher of the church of Christ at Duxbury, by many false, scandalous and opprobrious speeches." He was sentenced to make a public apology for his actions, find sureties for future good behavior and to sit in the stocks, with the stock sentence remitted. His father George and brother John had to pay surety for Nathaniel's good behavior with he being bound for monies and to pay a fine. Three years later, on 5 June 1671, he was fined for "telling several lies which tended greatly to the hurt of the Colony in reference to some particulars about the Indians." And then on 1 March 1674/5 he was sentenced to be whipped for "lying with an Indian woman," and had to pay a fine in the form of bushels of corn to the Indian woman towards the keeping of her child. George lived in Plymouth, Duxbury and Dartmouth where his children were born and raised. His will dated Dartmouth 29 Mar 1697, proved 30 Jun 1704, bequeaths to then eldest son William, son John, son Nathan, daughter Deborah, daughters Mary, Lydia and Sarah when they reach eighteen; well-beloved wife Deborah and son William to execute the estate; friends Joseph Tripp and George Cadman to be overseers. The widow Deborah Soule repudiated the will on "ye 22 day of ye 4th month 1704". His granddaughter Mary Coggeshall, daughter of son George, contested his will and was awarded (1719) a share representing her father's rights.

Deborah Soule left a will dated Dartmouth, proved 1 Mar 1709 as the wife of George Soule Sr., late of Dartmouth deceased. She bequeathed to daughter Sarah, sons William and Nathan, daughters Mary Divel, Lediah Browniel, and Mary Soule, daughter of "my son George Soule deceased". Notes:

There is no birth record for Susannah. There is no death record for Susannah. We only know that George and his wife had a daughter Susannah because she is mentioned very briefly in his will. No married name is provided for Susannah, and she received only a few pence in the will. Her birth is estimated in "The Great Migration Begins," Vol 3, P-W as about 1640.
The identification of Francis West's wife as Susannah maiden name Soule comes from an article published in 1924 in The Mayflower Descendant (volume 26 No. 1 page 1). I couldn't find this volume online, so I have scanned the most relevant pages in under the Memories tab. The article was written by George Ernest Bowman about a "Memmorandum Book" written by Elder Samuel West. Much of the book appears to be written around 1800 and in said book Elder Samuel West wrote: "my great grandfather Francis West Came from Europe to Amarica [sic] Soon after the first Settlement at Plymouth and Soon after his arival [sic] he married A young Lady By the name of Sole daughter of Mr George Sole (he came with his family to Plymouth in the first Vessel that Came their [sic] from Europe) by whoom [sic] he had Seven Sons & 2 daughters his Sons names ware [sic] Francis Thomas Peter William Richard Clemment & John his daughters names ware [sic] Martha & Susanna martha married a Fones by whoom [sic] She had Children Susanna married a Barber by whoom she had a number of Sons & daughters"
Since there is no way to really double-check this information with any primary sources, it has generally been accepted by genealogists.
Recently, in the book "The Great Migration Begins," Vol 3, P-W, page 1707, Susanna Soule is identified as having a husband named Francis West, although no more information is supplied.
An article was published in the Mayflower Families, Volume 3 which identifies the children of Susanna Soule and Francis Wast/West and lists seven sons and two daughters for this couple, based on the above sources and an additional tax document from Kingstowne. Those children identified are:
    1. Francis, b. ca. 1660
    2. Richard, b. ca. 1661-4
    *3. Susanna, b. ca. 1666
    4. Peter, b. ca. 1668/9; n.f.r. (nothing further recorded)
    5. John, b. ca. 1672; n.f.r.
    6. Martha, b. ca. 1675
    7. William, b. 31 May 1681
    8. Thomas, b. 18 Sept. 1684, twin.
    9. Clement, b. 18 Sept. 1684, twin.
This article says that "The children of this family have been difficult to trace. Francis, Susannah, and Martha remained in the Kingstown RI area; William removed to Newport RI, probably after the death of his first wife; Clement moved to Charlestown RI, and then disappears from RI records, perhaps moving to Dutchess County NY; Richard returned to Plymouth and Bristol County, living in Middleboro and Taunton. We have not found Peter, John, nor Thomas." Since I couldn't find this volume online, I have scanned the relevant pages in under the Memories Tab.
Francis and Susannah had several children while living in "Kings Towne," some of whom have actual birth records. On ancestry.com you can find the collection, "Rhode Island, Vital Extracts, 1636-1899 Vol. 05: Washington County: Births, Marriages, Deaths," which is an indexed copy of some original records. In this collection, there is a birth record for William of Francis & Susannah West, May 31, 1681, and one for Thomas of Francis & Susannah West, September 18, 1684. Next to this there is a strange appendage: "I have Clement, instead of Thomas, at same date, R.G.H." Some have suggested that perhaps Clement and Thomas were twins. I don't know. I suspect that there is only one child born on that date, but that the handwriting was difficult to read.
In addition to Clement, Thomas, and William who have birth records (kind of), Francis and Susannah are believed to have several other children. Francis West who married 12 May 1699 in East Greenwich, Kent, Rhode Island is linked through DNA, name, and a tax assessment to this father Francis West. Richard is similarly linked through DNA, name, and the above-referenced tax assessment. There has been nothing found about Peter and John, if they existed.

    • FSID: L6HD-WNC

    Notes:

There may have been two Mary Haskells born about the same time: Mary, daughter of Mark Haskell and Mary Smith, born 20 March 1677/8 in Beverly, and another Mary, supposedly daughter of John Haskell and Patience Soule, born 23 April 1689 (a Mayflower descendant).

The definitive article about this was written by Robert S. Wakefield and Ruth Wilder Sherman, "The Children of John and Patience (Soule) Haskell," The American Genealogist (TAG) Vol. 57 pp. 77 - 81.

However recent lists of the children of John Haskell and Patience, including the one on this page (at this time) do not even list a daughter Mary.

    From Find A Grave:
"Patience's parents are Mayflower Pilgrims George and Mary (Beckett) Soule.
Patience's father, George Soule was the 35th signer of the Mayflower Compact. This was a set of rules for conduct to live by in Plymouth. In 1645, he sold the lands he had in Plymouth and moved to Duxbury. He acquired many land holdings, some of which were in Middleboro. He gave or sold this property to his sons-in-law, John Haskell and Francis Walker in 1668 which may be why John moved there."
