    From the Burlington Standard
Auguste Alvertine Schmidt, nee Wald, was born on Aug. 30, 1831, at Fredersdorf, near Berlin, Germany. It was there where she also spent the days of her youth. In the year 1855 she came to America with her parents, at first to Burlington. On Sept. 5, 1858, she was united in marriage to William Schmidt, who died on May 29, 10-4. Shortly after their marriage the young couple moved to Missouri, but on account of the war they returned to Wisconsin in the early 60s. Since that time the deceased has continually lived in Wilmot, where she was respected and esteemed by all who knew her.

An upright and sincere christian, she was always willing to lend a helping hand in time of need. Above all did she love the kingdom of God, the church, in particular our Lutheran congregation at Wilmot, with which she has been affiliated ever since the same was founded in 1866.

During the last years of her life the deceased was much troubled with rheumatism. This, together with other ailments of old age, was also the cause of her death. During the last four weeks she was seriously ill with rheumatism, at times suffering intensely. Patiently she waited and prayed for the end to come, when she would be delivered from all evil of this vale of tears and be with her saviour evermore.

She peacefully passed away last Saturday evening at 9:40. She leaves to mourn her death one son, one daughter, one son-in-law, and other relatives. Her age was 83 years, 11 months and 14 days. Thefuneral took place Tuesday afternoon; Rev.S. A. Jedele conducting the services.

Served as a private in the 6th Regiment Missouri State Militia (Eppstein), enrolling on 21 Dec 1861. Transferred to Field and Staff as Principal Musician. He served through the changes to the 13th Regiment Missouri State Militia to the 5th Regiment Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He mustered out at Ft. Leavenworth, KS on 14 Jan 1865. Although another record has his discharged at Ft. Leavenworth as Feb 1866. It also notes that he was disabled by deafness at Denver Colorado on Jan 1866. This was from exposure to cold which settled in his head and resulted in deafness, which continued up until the time of his death. It prevented him from manual labor.

The following is from Adolph's medical officer: "I first saw a soldier called Adolph Wald in March 1865 at Rolla, Missouri. He was our Chief Musician, and a good brave one too. He was well and hearty then to all appearances as I could see him performing daily. Each and day, when we were in Camp together and that was almost all the time, we travelled out to the Plains together, But Constant blowing the Instrutment (a horn) and then Severe and Sudden changes of weather. In heat in day time from which there was no retreat, and the Chilling nights, Severe Rains and Sometimes very cool rains and other times being off very warm, Sleeping on the Ground without Tents freuently, commenced to wear on him. And he had what in common Parliance was called a cold, stopping up in the Head, Severe and Constant Headache when I noticed him yet performing his duties as Leader of the Band as well as he could, I gave him tgreatment for it at Junction City (near Ft. Riley) Cold Creek and at Council Grove Kansas, we parted about the 8th day of July 1865. Since which time I have not met him. However I understood from Some of the Soldiers that he was worse after I parted with him. I have no interest in the presentation of his Claim for pension. Either directly or indirectly, nor am I of relations to him Either by blood or marriage."

    The following is from http://members.tripod.com/~debmurray/marion/marbioref-29.htm#awald
ADOLPH WALD, of No. 417 North Liberty street, Indianapolis, is a well known andhighly esteemed German-American citizen. He was born near Berlin, Germany, Dec. 14, 1843, son of Emanuel Wald.

Emanuel Wald brought his family to America in 1855, and soon found recognition for his abilities as a teacher and preacher. On coming to this country the family located at Burlington, Wis., but in 1858 removed to Brownsville, Mo. There the influence of the coming strife of the Rebellion was already felt, and, as Mr. Wald favored the Union cause, conditions became so unpleasant that he decided to return to the North. He again took up his residence at Burlington, Wis., where he passed his remaining years, dying at the ripe old age of eighty-five years. Mr. Wald had been twice married, his first wife dying in his German home, and his second in Missouri. He was the father of seventeen children.

Adolph Wald and his brother Herman bore arms for the Union during the Great Rebellion. Herman, who served in a Missouri regiment, died in Burlington, Wis., in 1897. Adolph enlisted August 1, 1861, in Company B, Boonville Battalion, United States Reserve Corps. He was an accomplished musician, having given this art much attention from his childhood, and when he entered the army his services were in great demand, and he was present as a musician in the leading events in and around Boonville and Carthage until the Battalion was disbanded Dec. 18, 1861. Three days later, Mr. Wald and the most of the battalion enlisted in the 1st Missouri Volunteer Infantry. He served with this regiment as principal musician until it was mustered out at St Lou is, Jan. 14, 1865. Mr. Wald, however, did not return to civil life, and on Feb. 20, 1865, he became a member of the 13th Missouri Veteran Cavalry, being appointed its chief trumpeter; with this command he remained until it was mustered out Jan. 11, 1866, months after the closing of the War, as it was long engaged on the southwest frontiers, where it did various duties, until its discharge at Fort Leavenworth, Kans. Mr. Wald served as leader of the regi mental band, and was so commissioned.

In 1876 Mr. Wald and his family became residents of Indianapolis, where he was prominent for many years as a musician and band leader, until deafness, which was the result of catarrh acquired in the army, compelled him to give up active musical labors. He is now engaged in the manufacture of cigars. He is a prominent and popular member of Major Anderson Post, G. A. R., at Indianapolis. Mr. Wald was married at Boonville, Mo., Dec. 27, 1866, to Miss Barbara Herlinger, who came to the United States with her parents when but three years of age.

I'm trying to find out more about my great great aunt, Mary Emmaline "Emily" (Rabia) (Mondier) WALD and her husband, Theodore "Theo" WALD. From a 1990 letter written by Odell Myers accompanying Santiago Rabia's papers donated to the Alamo, I have a few clues -- that the Walds had a house on East Bow Street which was damaged by a fire, that "they died in the 1930s" and that they are buried in "the Old Noonday Cemetery just East of Tyler." Another distant cousin remembered that there were headstones for their graves. She recalled that they were known to the family as Aunt Emm and Uncle Theo. Aunt Emm also went by Emily. Mary E and Theodore Wald appear on the 1900 through 1920 census records for Tyler, Smith Co., TX. Aunt Emm had been married before to Peter Mondier (seen spelled Mondere as well as Mondeer). She had a son James Mondier. He appears in a directory listing for Waco, TX in 1886, 1887 as a switchman for "T and street L Railway." Aunt Emm's granddaughter, "Elen R Mondeer," appears on the 1910 census residing in the Wald household, listed as age 14. The 1990 letter to the Alamo refers to the granddaughter as "Reitzel." On the Smith County, TX census records 1900 through 1920, the Walds have neighbors Charles H. and Ellen Reitzell. Aunt Emm was born before 1850 in Nacogdoches County, TX to Santiago RABIA and Nancy Rebecca CARROLL. The 1990 letter to the Alamo states that she may have resided in or near Belcherville, Montague Co., TX when married to Peter Mondere (Mondier). She appears on 1870 census records for Grayson County as Mary E Mondier. On 1880 census records for Grayson County, she is listed as Mary E Mondere. I would also like to know what happened to her son, James Mondier, and granddaughter, Elen R Mondeer/ Mondier/ Mondere.

    My Response to the Post:

I have a Theodore Wald who was born in 1848 (by early census records)although it could be 1849. He was born in Fredersdorf, Markisch-Oderland, Brandenburg, Brandenburg, Germany; the son of Emmanual and Mary Wald. He first came to Madison, Wisconsin then to Cooper County, Missouri. When the Civil War broke out Emmanual took part of his family back to Wisconsin. Mary was deceased by that time. Part of the family stayed in Missouri. The family was very musical (Emmanual was a music teacher in Germany) so Theodore and his brother Adolph ended up in a regimental Union Army band during the War. Theodore returned to Boonville Cooper County, Missouri but left sometime after 1870. It is said that he left for Texas and the family lost touch with him. Could The Theodore Wald who married M. E. Mondere on 22 Apr 1890 in Navarro County, Texas and mine be one in the same?

To me this is a long story of many years in the making. In 1870 Theodore was a tanner in Boonville. A little bit puzzling until I remember that a number of his brothers were shoemakers, leather salesmen, etc. While in Boonville he boarded with the Dauwater family.

    Notes:

So very little is known about Otto. His sister, Anna Marie nee’ Wald Thoma, tried to find him in the 1920s. She was never successful.

What we do know for certain was that in 1877 Otto was living in Indianapolis, Marion, Indiana on the NE Corner of Japan and Texas Streets. And that is the exact same address that his brother Adolph Gustav Wald was living. In Indianapolis he was working as a printer at the Gutenberg Company. The Gutenberg Company was also publishers of German language newspapers.

The next location for Otto appears to be in Louisville, Ky in 1878 where he was living at 103 E. Green Street. Again his occupation was printer and he was working for Die Neue Zeit or The New Age German language newspaper.

In 1880 there is an Otto Wald, age 20, living at 8 Magnolia Avenue in Austin, Travis County, Texas. He was a printer working for Charles A Buechner who was the owner and publisher of the Texas Volkszeitung weekly (Thursday) German language newspaper. In the same household was Charles A Buechner, age 43, Mary nee' Thielipapae Schenken Buechner, age 32, Adalbert Schenken, age 18, Agnes Schenken, age 15, Willie, Schenken, age 12, Ella Buechner, age 4, and Belle Buchner, age 2.

On 27 Dec 1883, Otto R(udolf) Wald married Agnes Matihilda Maria Schenken, that same little 15 year old girl who lived in the same house that he was living in 1880.

There is no record of how long the Texas Volkszeitung was published. It was chartered on 17 Jan 1878 and likely went out of existence when Charles A Buechner died on 19 Jun 1902. It was a weekly German language newspaper published on each Thursday, had a subscription of 8,000 and cost $2 per year.

In 1892, Otto R Wald appears on the 1892 Voter List of Austin.

Next Otto show up in the Morrison & Foumy's General Directory of the City of Austin, 1893-1894, Page 285. He is listed as Otto R Wald and lived at 1904 1/2 University Avenue in Austin.

The same directory for the years 1897-1898; page 301 lists Agnes Wald (Mrs Otto R) renting 1904 1/2 University Avenue. There is no mention of Otto Wald in this directory, just Agnes Wald or Mrs Otto R Wald. From this the conclusions can be made that Otto died 1894-1897 or that he and Agnes have separated.

In the 1900 census Agnes is living at 1904 University with her mother, step father, and other siblings. She is listed as widowed, working as a seamstress, and Otto is not to be found.

The Morrison & Fourny's General Directory of the City of Austin, 1900-1901 list Mrs Agnes Wald as a dressmaker living and working at 1904 University Avenue. Again Otto is not found in this directory.

The 1906-1907 City Directory of Austin Listed Mrs A Wald as a seamstress working at her residence at 100 E 30th Street SW; but also lists her living at 100 E 30th street and living with E. J. Pressler, and Mrs C. A. Bruckner. As before, Otto does not appear in this directory.

The 1910 Census for Austin lists Agnes living at the same address with her mother, sister, brother-in-law and other relatives. She is again a seamstress working out of her home. But this time she lists herself as being married for 26 years; which is consistent with her marriage to Otto in 1863.

Here is where it gets weird. From 1894 to 1910 this chain of data indicates that Otto is dead. But suddenly Agnes claims to be married. And in 1910 an Otto R Wald, born 1867 in Missouri, shows up on the Lee County, Texas census where he is working as a printer, is widowed, and parents are both from Wisconsin. This seems to be consistent with our Otto who would have been taken from Missouri to Wisconsin by his father in 1864 when he was only three years old. It also appears to be consistent with a man who has worked his whole life as a printer and living with those who employed him. Additionally, Lee County borders Travis County.

In 1930 an Otto Wald, born 1861 in Missouri, shows up living at 108 Wilson Avenue in Coolidge, Pinal, Arizona where he listed as widowed, and a printer. His parents are from Germany and he lists his marriage date as being 1883. Meanwhile back in Austin, Agnes Wald is listed as widow living at 102 E 30th Street with her sister, brother-in-law and other relations.

In 1940 Agnes Wald, now 75, is still listed as a widow living at 302 East 30th Street with the same relations. Back in Arizona, Otto dies on 25 Jul 1940 at 407 E Jefferson Street, Phoenix, Maricopa, His death certificate states that he has been living at this address since 1935. He is listed as being born 04 Nov 1860 in Missouri, that he is a printer, his father is Manuel Wall born in Germany, his mother was Martha Rudolf also born in Germany. He died of a cerebral hemorrhage. He is supposedly buried in the Greenwood Cemetery in Phoenix.

Agnes is listed in the Austin City Directory of 1947 as living at 302 E 30th Street and her spouse is Otto Wald. In the Austin Directory of 1949 he is still living at 302 E 30th Street and her spouse is Otto Wald. And is 1952 she is listed as Agnes Wald and her spouse is Otto Wald.

Agnes was born 12 Mar 1865 and died 21 May 1959. She is buried in the Oakwood Cemetery in Austin, Travis County, Texas. She and Otto never had any children.

I believe this to be the accurate story of Otto's life and his marriage to Agnes Schenken. When just a little over 2 years old his mother dies. Otto goes to Wisconsin with his father and some of his siblings. He lives around Burlington, Wisconsin is never formally educated but learns to read and write German. In fact, German is likely is first language rather than second. Before his father dies he leaves for Indianapolis where he lives with his brother and works as a printer for a German language newspaper. Where he learned manual type setting is unknown, it could have been Burlington or Indianapolis. While he is living with his brother his relationships is estranged and he moves to Louisville continuing the same trade. Possibly a temperamental man he ends up in Austin, Texas living with a young woman. Agnes is living with her widowed mother in a house with her step-father and half-siblings. Marriage is likely her only escape and she finds that with Otto. In 1883 they are married but sometime between 1894 and 1897 the marriage is turning sour. What would you expect of a lonely, temperamental man who marries a woman wanting to escape her home life? And they living in a time when divorced was unacceptable. So they claim to be widowed; which is better than divorced or separated. But separated they were as there no indications otherwise. Otto leaves the area but returns on or before the 1910 census to a neighboring county. Likely he has gone to see Agnes as she now claims to have been married for 26 years. But as it does not last. Otto again leaves and it is possible that he went to live with his brother Rudolph in Kansas. He heads to the SW where he again finds work in his trade until his death. Agnes has returned to widowed status and remains that way until her death. I wonder if she ever learned of Otto's death in Phoenix.

My great grandmother named one of her sons Otto Wald Thoma, evidently after her brother. Nearing the end of her lifetime she began a search to find Otto, but she never did. The only indication that she ever received was that he might be in Kansas. The best that relatives could ever tell her was that Otto was a wandering man. He was never in one place for any length of time and that he might show up on the doorstep of his relatives in Wisconsin, Indiana, or Kansas unannounced. Grandma, I found your brother Otto for you! But maybe it is best not to tell you, I think you would cry.

    Jim

    From the Burlington Standard

It becomes our painful duty this week to announce the death of Ernest H. Wald, which event occurred a few minutes after 10 o'clock Sunday, the 5th inst. Ernest was born October 29th 1864 in Burlington, Wisconsin, making him 23 years, 9 months, and 6 days old. He came with his father's family to Hanover in 1880 where he has since resided. Being a young man of more than ordinary intelligence and social qualities, he soon obtained employment in the dry goods business, in which he continued until failing health admonished him that he must try and recuperate his wasting energies. He was afflicted with that dread disease, consumption, and after trying all the remedies known to the profession without receiving any substantial benefit, he was advised to seek a change of climate. So the summer of 1885 was spent in the mountains of Colorado. Returning about the first of November he was associated with the writer as deputy postmaster until the first of April 1886 when his health still failing, he left for southern California, where he remained two years, returning last spring, and although he probably received some temporary relief there was no permanent benefit derived. Since his return he gradually grew weaker and although there was no hopes of his recover yet his death was rather sudden and a surprise to many, as he had been able to be about town most of the time. Ernest was well known to the people of Hanover, and he had become quite a favorite who will be greatly missed. The funeral which was largely attended took place at 3 o'clock Monday afternoon from the Evangelical church, the Rev. F. M. Jackson officiating, after which the remains were deposited in the cemetery south of town.
