Born in Bath, Somerset, England about 1600, Francis married 1621 Elizabeth (perhaps surnamed Hall). He had a grant of land in 1638 in Duxbury, Plymouth, MA where he signed his will 29 Oct 1666, dying in 1669. Francis was a carpenter and bridge builder. Francis served in a company commanded by Captain Myles Standish. It is believed that Francis is descended from the Duke of Boullon, a Crusader.
Francis Godfrey was a carpenter and bridge builder, and in August 1643, we find his name on the muster roll of the Duxbury Company commanded by Capt. Myles Standish: he removed to Bridgewater where he died in 1669; it is thought that the name Godfrey comes from the Duke of Bouillion, the Crusader.

Even thought a third of his estate was located at Providence, Francis Godfrey has not been found in published Providence or Rhode Island records.

Three immigrants by the name of Godfrey came to Massachusetts around 1638.. Francis Godfrey settled at Duxbury, where he had a grant of land in 1638; he removed to Marshfield by 1650 and finally to Bridgewater by 1657.

Francis appears on the muster roll in 8/1643 of the Duxbury Company commanded by Capt. Miles Standish. He removed to Bridgewater where he died in 1669. It is thought that the name Godfrey comes from the Duke of Bouillon, the Crusader [John Cary the Plymouth Pilgrim, p. 61].

It also appears that in 1646, according to the records of Marshfield: "At the Town meeting it was agreed that Edward Winsloe (afterward Governor) should agree with F. Godfrey for making a bridge over South River and what he shall agree the town are ready to affirm."

In his will, dated 26 February 1666[/7] and proved 29 October 1669, "Francis Godfrey, aged inhabitant of the town of Bridgwater," made "my wife Elizabeth Godfrey my sole executrix, and Mr. James Browne of Rehoboth and Samuell Edson of Bridgwater my overseers," and bequeathed to "my wife Elizabeth Godfrey my whole complete purchase of lands, both already laid out and to be laid out, with all the immunities and privileges belonging thereunto, with my dwelling house and outhouses ..., my lands laid out lying and situate as followeth: forty acres of upland lying at a place ususally called Salsbury Plain running cross the way ususally called the Bay Path, and twenty-four acres of of upland lying upon the river usually called John's River ..., twenty acres of upland lying upon the Town's River ..., ten acres of upland more joining to my meadow land upon the Town's River, two acres of meadow land more or less lying in the meadow called Flaggy Meadow, two acres and an half more ...

From 28 Mar 1902 paper: News from Schaller. Mike Callahan, an aged man, residing two miles south of Schaller, who is somewhat demented, wandered away from home Monday evening. After wandering about all night, he came to the home of George Gould, very badly chilled. As Mr. Gould was going to Early he brought Mr. Callahan with him and upon their arrival gave him into the custody of Constable Fuller. J. M. Hello Jim
Not sure what church my Goulds were members of. They certainly were poor. Isaac Gould did not own any property in Newfane VT or in Leverett MA. A probable son Charles C. Gould did own a small farm in Leverett and his "heirs" lived on it at the time Isaac Gould died in 1847.
I did find a few items on Lorenzo.

In Mass Soldiers in the Civil War (not sure if this is the whole title, it's a multi-volume setz0. 52cd Regiment Mass. Volunteer Infantry Company C.
Gould, Lorenzo D. Priv. Res. Northampton, weaver, 33, enl. Oct. 9 1862, must. Oct. 9 1862, killed June 14 1863 at Port Hudson, La.
Right below his name is that of Nathan P. Gould, prov. res. Northampton, printer, 42, enl Sept. 9 1862, Must out Aug. 14 1863.
Nathan Phillips Gould was one of the sons of Isaac Gould and Betsey Phillips.

History of the Fifty-Second Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers by the Chaplain J.F. Moors 1893
    Company C.
Lorenzo D. Gould, place of birth Northampton, date of birth '29, Place of enlistment Northampton, Date of enlistment Aug. '62, Private, occupation ___, residence ____, killed in action Port Hudson June 14 '63.
I'm guessing the chaplain estimated the year of his birth from his age. The entry for Nathan P. Gould says he was born in Hatfield and enlisted Aug. '62. He lived in Hatfield previous to moving to Northampton.

Hampshire Gazette June 30 1863 (Northampton MA)
N.P. Gould, a private in Company C was also killed in the same action. He was formerly in the employ of Mr. Amos Sawyer in this town. It is said that his will was found on his person after death being dated just three days previous.
    * It was actually Lorenzo who died, not Nathan P. Gould.

The probate file on Lorenzo Gould in Hampshire County Registry of Probate (Northampton MA) contains a document that states:
    To the Honorable the Judge of the Probate Court in and for the County of Hampshire;
Respectfully represents Albert C. Morton of Williamsburgh in the County of Hampshire that Lorenzo D. Gould who last dwelt in Northampton in said County of Hampshire, died on the fourteenth day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-three possessed of goods and estate remaining to be administered, leaving no widow, and as his only heirs-in-law and next of kin, the persons whose names, residence and relationship to the deceased are as follows, viz: - Chauncey Gould of Fennimore in Grant County Wisconsin brother, that said deceased left a will and codicil herewith presented, wherein no one is named executor Wherefore your petitioner pray that that said will may be proved and allowed, and administration with the will annexed be granted him. Dated this twentieth day of Sept. A.D. 1863. Albert C. Morton. The undersigned, being all the heirs-at-law and next of kin, and the only parties interested in the foregoing Petition, request that the prayer thereof be granted, without further notice.
    * This is the only document I copied. I can check the probate file for the will and let you know what it says. Might not be able to get to this for a few weeks.

    Happy Easter
    Jim Carroll

From the Wednesday, December 24, 1890 issue of THE STAR of Schaller, Sac County, Iowa:

    Crystal Wedding

The friends of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Gould, to the number of fifty-two gathered at their pleasant commodious home in Eden township Friday evening, Dec. 19, to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of their wedding day. Mr. and Mrs. Gould were evidently not expecting to entertain friends that evening but soon adjusted themselves to circumstances and a very enjoyable time followed. After a bountiful supper Mr. John W. Martin in a neat little speech presented to Mr. and Mrs. Gould in behalf of their many friends, two beautiful easy chairs, a dinner sett composed of 112 pieces, a nice water sett, a pickle castor and $2.20 in money. Mr. Gould responded in a few feeling words and invited all to come again, singly or enmasse. It was noted that none of the Schaller friends were present although many of their names were on the list of contributors which was presented by Mrs. M. E. Wright to the happy pair.

Mrs. Gould's friends from Wisconsin greatly wished to be present but were unable to come although her father, Mr. Borah was respresented on the list by a $2.00 contribution.

We hope that Mr. and Mrs. Gould may live to celebrate their golden wedding and that happiness and prosperity may ever be theirs.

    GEORGE B. GOULD.

This is the era of the installation and use of modern machinery and the
prolific use of the automobile in lightening the former heavy task which fell
to the lot of the average farmer. No one knows the value of labor saving
machinery better than the modern farmer. In every department of his work,
from plowing the land to harvesting the crops, inventive genius has sought
to save him time, expense and labor, and, at a reduced cost, increase and
improve his products and add to the productive value of his land. As a re-
sult, the farm of toda}-, when completely erjuipped, affords its owner an ease
and facility of operation that his father before him would never have dreamed
was possible. The automobile, too, has done much to add to the ease and
profit of farm life and work. Time is money to the farmer as much as to
the man in any other walk of life. To "hitch up" and drive to the nearest
town takes time; the automobile saves three-fourths of it. It serves, too,
in carrying small produce to market and it affords a quicker means of trans-
portation from one part of the farm to another than the horse affords. Ap-
parently the most highly developed industry in Sac county and western Iowa
akin to the developm.ent of agriculture and indicative of the great prosperity
of the region is the automobile business. No town is too small to afford its
garage and place of distribution, and some of them boast several finelv equip-
ped sales rooms and repair departments. In this connection we find that an
agriculturist, George B. Gould, quick to see to what extent this industry
would be developed on account of the demands of the times, established the
Gould automobile sales rooms and garage in Schaller in 191 1. The fore-
sight and business acumen which made him a successful farmer has alike
enabled him to make a success of this business venture. In the fall of 1912
he began the erection of a large concrete structure, thirty-five bv seventv-five
feet in dimension, for a sales room, with a modernly equipped repair shop
twenty-five by fifty feet in extent, and completed the building in May, 1913.
Three men are employed. This concern sells such well known makes as the Jeffrey line, which includes the Ramljler and the New Jeffrey car. the Moon, the Overland and the Maxwell.

George B. Gould was born June 6, 1855, in Grant county. Wisconsin,
the son of Chauncey and Flavia A. (Brusseau) Gould. His father was a
native of, Vermont and his mother is a native of Canada, of French ancestry.
Her father was a Frenchman, who married a lady of English birth.
Chauncey Gould left Vermont in about the year 1853, journeyed to Wiscon-
sin and settled on a farm in Grant county. In 1885 he migrated to Sac county so as to be in the proximity of his son George. For some years he resided on a farm near Schaller and then retired to the town. He died in December, 1900. Mrs. Gould resides with her daughter in Correctionville, Iowa, and is over eighty years of age. Two children were born to them, George B. with whom this narrative deals, and Mrs. Emma Borah, who resides on a farm about four miles from Correctionville.

He whose name forms the caption of this review came to Sac county in
the month of May, 1876, while not yet of age, and settled on three- hundred
and twenty acres of land in section 33, Eden township, paying therefor five
dollars and forty cents an acre, the year previous to his real settlement in the
county. His first dwelling place was a small house sixteen by twenty-four
feet in dimension, which he has twice remodeled from the original plan. It
is a remarkable fact and a typical illustration of the great rise in land values
that the annual rental which Mr. Gould now receives from this farm is more
than the original cost, the rental being eight dollars an acre. Later he bought
six hundred and forty acres additional at seven dollars and fifty cents an acre,
in Minnesota, which has since become very valuable. He resided on his Eden
township farm for twenty-five years and in 1903 he removed to Schaller.

Mr. Gould is a Progressive Republican politically. While not a member
of any church, he firmly believes in the usefulness of church organizations
as having an excellent moral effect in any community and is a liberal giver
to the cause of religion. The members of his family are attendants at the
Methodist Episcopal church. He is a member of the Ancient Free and
Accepted Masons and the Modern Woodmen.

Mr. Gould has been twice married. His first wife was Margaret Borah,
of Wisconsin, whom he espoused in 1875, and who died in 1891 at the age of
thirty-three years, leaving three children: Samuel C, a dentist in Ashton,
Illinois: Pearl L., wife of Professor Eells, superintendent of the Rolfe, Iowa,
public schools : Margaret, whose birth was the unfortunate time of her
mother's death, and who likewise died in 19 11 at the age of twenty years.
Mr. Gould was again married on December 4, 1895, to Ella Parrott, a lady

    842 SAC COUNTY, IOWA.

of English nativity and who came to America with her parents when thirteen
years of age and settled at Dyersville, Iowa, and later came to Schaller. One
child has blessed this union, Doris A., who is a student in the Schaller high
school. Pronounced attainments and recognized ability in two well defined
and important lines, in each of which he has been successful, characterizes

George B. Gould, who would have been 90 June 26, died his home here Tuesday afternoon following a short illness. The funeral will be this afternoon at 2:30 at the home of his son-in-law and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter McQuigg. Rev. Moore G. Bell of the First Presbyterian Church, his pastor, will conduct the service. Burial arrangements are in charge of the George S. Knowles funeral home.
Schaller second oldest resident, Mr. Gould came here when he was 21 from Grant Co., WI his father, Chauncy Gould, had brought land Eden Twp. before there was a town here and his son came to look after it for him bringing his bride, nee Margaret Borah. The farm was grassland and he found here quail and prairie chickens in abundance.
Mrs. Gould passed away in 1893. Four children were born to this union, all are deceased. They were Dr. Samuel C. Gould of Madison, WI. Maude who died in infancy; Mrs. Harry Pearl Eells of Cedar Falls; and Margaret who died at 19.
Five years later, Mr. Gould married miss Ella Perrott, who died in 1925. Mrs. Walter Doris McQuigg is the only child of this marriage.
Later, Mr. Gould married Miss Minnie Cameron, of Ontario Canada, who survives him.
Farmer and businessman, Mr. Gould made many contributions to the growth of this community, his continuous home, some 70 years. He was a member of the Schaller Presbyterian Church, a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Eastern Star and attended all of them regularly as that long as his health permitted.
Besides the survivor and widow and daughter, there are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

    FUNERAL OF ERNEST GOULD

The funeral of Ernest Gould, son of J. W. and Katherine Gould, of this city, took place Tuesday at Greenwood cemetery. The deceased was a fireman on the Omaha & Republican Valley railroad, and was accidentally killed on the night of April 17th. The accident occurred a few miles from Omaha. The body arrived from Omaha on Monday last in charge of Bro.'s T. F. Rhodes and G. C. Fair, of the Overland Lodge of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Firemen No. 123, of which the deceased was a member. The body was enclosed in a handsome rosewood casket with silver plated ornaments. On the lid of the coffin was an oval plate bearing the inscription "Our Brother". At the foot of the coffin there was placed a rich black velvet banner with deep fringe on which was inscribed in colored silk the initials "B.L.F." The funeral ceremonies were in charge of W. D. Smith, undertaker, of Bismarck, and the brethren of the Mandan lodge of Locomotive Firemen. The pallbearers were Bro.'s C. Nichols, Joseph Taylor, T. F. Rhodes, C. G. Allen, James Frost, and G. C. Fair. The body was taken in a hearse to the Presbyterian church and was followed by a large number of carriages, containing the parents of the young man and a large number of relatives and friends. The services at the church were conducted by the Rev. I. O. Sloan. The hymns sung by the choir were "In the dark and cloudy day," and "A few more years shall roll."

Mr. Sloan very feelingly referred to the young man as one who was well known to a large number of those who had come to take part in the last rites. He said he had known Ernest Gould for the last ten years. He was one he could speak highly of. He was kind hearted, and especially so to his mother and sisters, and he in return was dearly loved by them.

After the reading of appropriate passages of scripture, and a prayer, the service closed. The procession then reformed and the body was taken to Greenwood cemetery where it was finally interred. At the grave the service was conducted by the lodge chaplain and according to the ritual of the Brotherhood. The expense of the funeral will be born by the lodge to which the deceased belonged.
