From the Wednesday, December 24, 1890 issue of THE STAR of Schaller, Sac County, Iowa:

    Crystal Wedding

The friends of Mr. and Mrs. George B. Gould, to the number of fifty-two gathered at their pleasant commodious home in Eden township Friday evening, Dec. 19, to celebrate the fifteenth anniversary of their wedding day. Mr. and Mrs. Gould were evidently not expecting to entertain friends that evening but soon adjusted themselves to circumstances and a very enjoyable time followed. After a bountiful supper Mr. John W. Martin in a neat little speech presented to Mr. and Mrs. Gould in behalf of their many friends, two beautiful easy chairs, a dinner sett composed of 112 pieces, a nice water sett, a pickle castor and $2.20 in money. Mr. Gould responded in a few feeling words and invited all to come again, singly or enmasse. It was noted that none of the Schaller friends were present although many of their names were on the list of contributors which was presented by Mrs. M. E. Wright to the happy pair.

Mrs. Gould's friends from Wisconsin greatly wished to be present but were unable to come although her father, Mr. Borah was respresented on the list by a $2.00 contribution.

We hope that Mr. and Mrs. Gould may live to celebrate their golden wedding and that happiness and prosperity may ever be theirs.

    GEORGE B. GOULD.

This is the era of the installation and use of modern machinery and the
prolific use of the automobile in lightening the former heavy task which fell
to the lot of the average farmer. No one knows the value of labor saving
machinery better than the modern farmer. In every department of his work,
from plowing the land to harvesting the crops, inventive genius has sought
to save him time, expense and labor, and, at a reduced cost, increase and
improve his products and add to the productive value of his land. As a re-
sult, the farm of toda}-, when completely erjuipped, affords its owner an ease
and facility of operation that his father before him would never have dreamed
was possible. The automobile, too, has done much to add to the ease and
profit of farm life and work. Time is money to the farmer as much as to
the man in any other walk of life. To "hitch up" and drive to the nearest
town takes time; the automobile saves three-fourths of it. It serves, too,
in carrying small produce to market and it affords a quicker means of trans-
portation from one part of the farm to another than the horse affords. Ap-
parently the most highly developed industry in Sac county and western Iowa
akin to the developm.ent of agriculture and indicative of the great prosperity
of the region is the automobile business. No town is too small to afford its
garage and place of distribution, and some of them boast several finelv equip-
ped sales rooms and repair departments. In this connection we find that an
agriculturist, George B. Gould, quick to see to what extent this industry
would be developed on account of the demands of the times, established the
Gould automobile sales rooms and garage in Schaller in 191 1. The fore-
sight and business acumen which made him a successful farmer has alike
enabled him to make a success of this business venture. In the fall of 1912
he began the erection of a large concrete structure, thirty-five bv seventv-five
feet in dimension, for a sales room, with a modernly equipped repair shop
twenty-five by fifty feet in extent, and completed the building in May, 1913.
Three men are employed. This concern sells such well known makes as the Jeffrey line, which includes the Ramljler and the New Jeffrey car. the Moon, the Overland and the Maxwell.

George B. Gould was born June 6, 1855, in Grant county. Wisconsin,
the son of Chauncey and Flavia A. (Brusseau) Gould. His father was a
native of, Vermont and his mother is a native of Canada, of French ancestry.
Her father was a Frenchman, who married a lady of English birth.
Chauncey Gould left Vermont in about the year 1853, journeyed to Wiscon-
sin and settled on a farm in Grant county. In 1885 he migrated to Sac county so as to be in the proximity of his son George. For some years he resided on a farm near Schaller and then retired to the town. He died in December, 1900. Mrs. Gould resides with her daughter in Correctionville, Iowa, and is over eighty years of age. Two children were born to them, George B. with whom this narrative deals, and Mrs. Emma Borah, who resides on a farm about four miles from Correctionville.

He whose name forms the caption of this review came to Sac county in
the month of May, 1876, while not yet of age, and settled on three- hundred
and twenty acres of land in section 33, Eden township, paying therefor five
dollars and forty cents an acre, the year previous to his real settlement in the
county. His first dwelling place was a small house sixteen by twenty-four
feet in dimension, which he has twice remodeled from the original plan. It
is a remarkable fact and a typical illustration of the great rise in land values
that the annual rental which Mr. Gould now receives from this farm is more
than the original cost, the rental being eight dollars an acre. Later he bought
six hundred and forty acres additional at seven dollars and fifty cents an acre,
in Minnesota, which has since become very valuable. He resided on his Eden
township farm for twenty-five years and in 1903 he removed to Schaller.

Mr. Gould is a Progressive Republican politically. While not a member
of any church, he firmly believes in the usefulness of church organizations
as having an excellent moral effect in any community and is a liberal giver
to the cause of religion. The members of his family are attendants at the
Methodist Episcopal church. He is a member of the Ancient Free and
Accepted Masons and the Modern Woodmen.

Mr. Gould has been twice married. His first wife was Margaret Borah,
of Wisconsin, whom he espoused in 1875, and who died in 1891 at the age of
thirty-three years, leaving three children: Samuel C, a dentist in Ashton,
Illinois: Pearl L., wife of Professor Eells, superintendent of the Rolfe, Iowa,
public schools : Margaret, whose birth was the unfortunate time of her
mother's death, and who likewise died in 19 11 at the age of twenty years.
Mr. Gould was again married on December 4, 1895, to Ella Parrott, a lady

    842 SAC COUNTY, IOWA.

of English nativity and who came to America with her parents when thirteen
years of age and settled at Dyersville, Iowa, and later came to Schaller. One
child has blessed this union, Doris A., who is a student in the Schaller high
school. Pronounced attainments and recognized ability in two well defined
and important lines, in each of which he has been successful, characterizes

George B. Gould, who would have been 90 June 26, died his home here Tuesday afternoon following a short illness. The funeral will be this afternoon at 2:30 at the home of his son-in-law and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Walter McQuigg. Rev. Moore G. Bell of the First Presbyterian Church, his pastor, will conduct the service. Burial arrangements are in charge of the George S. Knowles funeral home.
Schaller second oldest resident, Mr. Gould came here when he was 21 from Grant Co., WI his father, Chauncy Gould, had brought land Eden Twp. before there was a town here and his son came to look after it for him bringing his bride, nee Margaret Borah. The farm was grassland and he found here quail and prairie chickens in abundance.
Mrs. Gould passed away in 1893. Four children were born to this union, all are deceased. They were Dr. Samuel C. Gould of Madison, WI. Maude who died in infancy; Mrs. Harry Pearl Eells of Cedar Falls; and Margaret who died at 19.
Five years later, Mr. Gould married miss Ella Perrott, who died in 1925. Mrs. Walter Doris McQuigg is the only child of this marriage.
Later, Mr. Gould married Miss Minnie Cameron, of Ontario Canada, who survives him.
Farmer and businessman, Mr. Gould made many contributions to the growth of this community, his continuous home, some 70 years. He was a member of the Schaller Presbyterian Church, a 32nd degree Mason, member of the Eastern Star and attended all of them regularly as that long as his health permitted.
Besides the survivor and widow and daughter, there are several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Jim enlisted in the US Army during World War II and served in the European theatre. Immediately after enlistment they sent him to weather school at Northwestern University, near Chicago. That's when he renewed his Cornell College 'acquaintance' with Marcella Kouba. After he graduated from weather school, he was sent to England and crossed the English channel shortly after "D Day", and was surrounded during the 'Battle of the Bulge". He was in the 21st Weather Squadron. His service number was D857141. They were married in King Memorial Chapel on the campus of Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where they both graduated prior to the war. His rank at discharge was Captain. He then went to work for the US Weather Bureau.

They first moved to Kansas City, MO, Des Moines, IA, Washington, DC, Omaha, NE and finally to Columbia, MO. After he retired from the weather bureau he started a private weather consulting firm predicting worldwide agricultural crop yields using computers and satellite weather data. These were very valuable to our country (and the CIA) during the Cold War, as he could tell from the satellite data how bad the crops were in Russia.

They were married in King Memorial Chapel on the campus of Cornell College in Mount Vernon, Iowa, where they graduated prior to the war.

History of the 21st Weather Squadron:

Activated at Bradley Field, Conn., in April 1943, the 21st Weather Squadron quickly moved overseas and was assigned to the 9th Air Force in October of the same year. With the purpose of providing dedicated meteorological intelligence to ground units, the 21st WS became the first fully deployable weather squadron in history with men trained specifically for combat; during Operation Overlord, 14 mobile weather units deployed 30 men in support of the ground troops. Following the Normandy invasion, Bronze Stars were awarded to 81 servicemen of the 21st WS.

The unit also earned the European-African-Middle-Eastern service streamer and three additional campaign streamers in Northern France, Rheinland, and Central Europe, for their unparalleled support to the war fighter.

Doris Louise Squibbs was born to F.W. and Doris McQuigg in Schaller, Iowa on September 12, 1932. She passed away peacefully on September 10, 2021, just two days short of her 89th birthday. She went to country school for eight years and graduated from Schaller High School in 1949, and was Salutatorian of her class. She participated in many of the activities the small school offered—plays, musicals and was especially good on the girls’ basketball team. She had a deadly long shot!

She continued her education at Iowa State Teachers College and received a two-year teaching certificate. Doris taught second grade in Milford, Iowa for three years. She then went to the University of Colorado, where she completed her junior year. While in Denver, she worked at the MAY D&F department store, and was an associate buyer until 1958. Then, she and a friend moved to Kansas City and she worked at AT&T Headquarters.

Doris, or Dottie as many friends call her, met Jerry Squibbs one Sunday morning on her front porch. He was visiting his friends, her downstairs neighbors. Their friendship sparked when they started discussing baseball. They went to a game together that day, and That was That!

Jerry and Dottie were married in Columbia, Missouri on September 3, 1960. They lived in Columbia for a year while Jerry completed his mechanical engineering degree and she worked at State Farm Insurance Company. He accepted a position with Natkin Company in Kansas City and Dottie went back to work for AT&T. They soon bought a house, and that is when she quit AT&T to stay at home. She enjoyed homemaking and entertaining her family and friends.

They welcomed their son, David in January 1971, and she loved being a mother and a wife. They all enjoyed traveling together, and Hawaii was a favorite location. They enjoyed trips to their special place on Lake Viking, and usually anywhere around water. They enjoyed their back yard pool and many times their home was the center of family holidays. Doris found a place for her talents by volunteering at Asbury United Methodist Church. She especially enjoyed her work with United Methodist Women and her positions on various boards and committees. She was an active member of Johnson County Young Matrons, and participated in helping establish TLC.

Jerry died far too early, in 1992. They had moved to Denver for his big promotion within his company, but when his heart was failing, they came back to Kansas City. Jerry passed away following his heart transplant surgery. Doris and her son David continued to live in Overland Park.

Her extended family was important to her, and she continued hosting holiday and family events. In 1999, she opened her home to her sister Ruth McQuigg. They together maintained their home and traditions. They traveled together, especially in the winter, to favorite spots like Charleston, South Carolina, Arizona, Gulf Shores and of course, Costa Rica to visit David. They moved from their Overland Park home to Brookdale Retirement Community in November of 2018. Doris lived her last few months at Villa St Francis.

Dottie will be remembered as a kind, generous lady—ready to talk sports with anyone who would listen. She and Jerry loved the Chiefs and Dottie studied the newspaper and knew many facts about both her beloved Chiefs and Royals. If you had a different opinion on a subject about sports, you probably were never going to win an argument with her.

Doris was preceded in death by Jerry, her parents, brothers Jim and Bruce, and sister Margaret. She is survived by her son, David, her sister, Ruth, and her sisters-in-law Suzanne Gehring and Peggy Squibbs. Her survivors also include numerous nieces and nephews, and a great many friends.

A Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, October 30th at 1:00 pm in the Hager Hall of Asbury United Methodist Church located at 5400 W 75th Street, Prairie Village, Kansas.  Memorials in Dottie’s honor may be given to Asbury United Methodist Church, 5400 W. 75th St., Prairie Village, KS 66208

Ellen L. Kohtz, daughter of Donald and Margaret (McQuigg) Miller, was born July 11, 1948 at Paullina, IA. She lived many places with her family, moving for her father’s work. She spent many summers with her grandparents on a lake in Minnesota where she learned to water ski and fish; skills that she spent her lifetime enjoying. In 1966, she graduated from Beatrice High School in southeast Nebraska. She attended the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in Education and graduated with distinction in 1970.

On May 31, 1969, Ellen married James H. Kohtz at Lincoln, NE. They made their home in Lincoln, where Ellen began her 44 year career teaching English at Pius X High School. They moved to Albion in 1978, where she continued teaching high school and middle school English classes at Albion Public School (later Boone Central School), retiring in 2014. Along with her love of teaching, she had a great passion for the art of Speech and coached many individuals and teams to championship titles. She was coordinator of the annual Color Day Coronation for many years, dedicated countless hours writing grant proposals to secure funds for various organization and causes, along with serving many years on the Nebraska State Education Association Negotiation Committee. In addition to teaching, she was a lifelong learner. She enjoyed taking classes in the summer and spent much of her free time reading books.

Ellen had many interests and hobbies, which she typically participated in with her husband Jim. They enjoyed taking in events regularly at the Omaha Symphony and the Omaha Playhouse. They traveled extensively throughout North America, along with trips to Europe, Asia, Central America, South America and Iceland visiting interesting places, but Machu Picchu in Peru and the country of Switzerland, were some of her favorites. Notes:

For any of you who were unable to attend Jim's memorial service today, I wanted to attach the eulogy my husband, Pete, wrote for his good friend. Thank you again to Jay Walker for reading this in Pete's absence. In spite of the great sadness we all felt, it was a beautiful service. RIP Big JIm.

Here is the letter that was read:

I first met Jim in the summer of 1982 when I was working at Bud’s Amoco in Huxley, IA. As I am sure all of you will agree, meeting Jim for the first time is something you never forget. I remember standing in amazement as this huge truck with speed-boat attached pulled in for gas. As I walked out to his truck, I remember his boat had a motor big enough for 3 boats and enough beer coolers in the back for a spring break beach party. I was sure I couldn’t have been more in awe until from behind the gas pump appeared a giant of a man who reached out with a hand so big that when he shook mine it felt more like he was shaking my arm.
Immediately, he began asking me everything about my past- where I grew up, where I went to school and who my parents where. When Jim asked you something about your past he never forgot it. Little did I know that this day was the beginning of a friendship that would last for many years.
Over the next 6 years, I looked forward to the weekly conversations I had with Jim when he stopped in at the gas station. I can remember the day I told Jim that I was moving to Iowa City to attend Medical school at the University of Iowa. I am sure each of you can imagine the lecture I received from Jim, who everyone knows was a die-hard ISU alum. I must admit I took a verbal beating, but I also remember how proud he was of me when he shook my hand and wished me the best.
I always thought our paths would meet again, but little did I know it would be at one of Rick Putska’a wild game feeds and over a bowl of split beaver-tail soup. I can remember how happy I was to see Jim again but also how impressed I was that he remembered almost everything we had talked about 6 years prior. It was also at this time when I first met Sheryl. Over the next 20 years, Jim and Sheryl became close friends with my wife, Liz, and me. The memories we created together are some of the most cherished we have. Boating trips down the Mississippi river and fishing trips up in Ashland, Minnesota were always filled with Jim’s constant joking and laughter.
Jim just had a way of having fun and making those around him feel lucky to have him as a friend. It was fun to sit and have a beer with Jim, who commanded the room and the people around him, because he just enjoyed people. I must say I learned quickly that trying to keep up with Jim beer-for-beer was like trying to win the Boston Marathon by crawling thru the entire race… Impossible!
I always knew when Jim stopped by the clinic to visit. His voice and the laughter he created carried itself thru the office as Jim made his rounds from the front staff to the back offices. No one was safe when it came to his jokes about how short we all were or how we never let him eat the foods he wanted. Jim talked tough, but my nurses all said he was just a big Teddy Bear. It was obvious that Jim loved people, but it is more apparent that people loved Jim. He was always generous with his time, his resources, his compliments and a lesson for us all on how to live life to the fullest.
Everyone who knew Jim realized that two of his loves where hunting and fishing but more than these, his true loves in life where his wife Sheryl and his children. It was impossible to have a conversation with Jim that didn’t include him bragging about his family and their adventures and accomplishments. You young people made him so proud. Bryce, Janae and D.J., I hope you know that. I know he would want you to pick up and move ahead in a positive direction, in spite of the obvious hardships you have endured in the past few years, you can do this with the love and assistance from your family and friends. We’re all here for you.
And we all know how much he loved Sheryl-taking such protective and loving care of her as she battled brain cancer for 5 years and holding his family together through it all. To Jim, family meant everything, and it was obvious that Sheryl and his children were on a pedestal that only Jim was tall enough to reach.
We all have our own memories that we created with Jim. Whether he was your family member, your Ankeny High School or ISU basketball teammate, your insurance agent, your financial advisor, your hunting, fishing or boating friend, your neighbor, or just your friend--he wore many hats for sure. Fortunately for us, there will always be moments in our lives that will make us relive these memories and make us smile, but more importantly; make us realize that we are all better people because Jim was a part of our lives. It is these memories that we will cherish and hold onto so Jim will live forever in our hearts and minds.
Until we meet again, I will miss you my friend.

    Obituary

    Mary M. Wennerstrum
Des Moines - Mary was born in Sioux Falls, SD to Donald L. and Margaret (McQuigg) Miller. After moving several times, the Miller's settled in Ankeny where Mary graduated from Ankeny High School.
Mary attended Iowa State for a year, and then DMACC, where she graduated with her Assoc. Arts in Lib Arts, this is also where she met her husband to be, Brook.
Mary took after her Grandma 'Hattie' and was a consummate gardener, constantly planting vegetables and canning produce annually.
Married in 1980, living in the Des Moines area, son Jaimeson was born, shortly thereafter, a move to Boone, IA where Brian was born. Relocating to Des Moines before the boys were grade school age, remaining there in several different houses- always working on them- another 'hobby' picked up from her father- leaving them in better condition than which she found them.
Mary went back to DMACC and received her AA in Hotel/Motel management, with the idea of purchasing a resort. Locating a desirable property in N. Minnesota, which eventually fell through after moving to the locale, setting up house on an acreage. The garden spot was located with plenty of sun, with fantastic soil for root crops and berries, but a very short growing season. Mary also became a Worm Farmer, and Peddler of castings! The stay in MN was rather short, as Mary accepted a position with YFU in Des Moines.
Mary's interests varied widely, from theater and movies to gardening and fishing and politics. Most recently RV camping with a group that came to be known as the 'Tribe'. The outdoors and gardening were her escape and Spiritual place; but all those came behind her love for her grandchildren.
Mary is survived by husband Brook, sons Jaimeson (Maria) granddaughters Nina and Annika; son Brian (Michelle) and Claire and Colton.
Preceding her in death were parents Donald L Miller and Margaret Miller, sister Ellen Kohtz, and brother James D. Miller.
A Celebration of Life will be held on Feb. 19, 2022, at noon at 1400 Penn Ave., Des Moines.
