Thomas Gower was baptised in Hadzor in 1557, the son of Richard and Margaret. Richard died in 1560 and Margaret married again, to John Wynnes, a gentleman of Droitwich. When John died in October 1575 he mentioned his step-son Thomas in his will.

I will that Thomas Gower my son in lawe shall serve his mother for the end and term of six yeres after my decease and kepe her shop for her as he hath done for me And at the end of the six yeres serving his mother to give him fourtie pounds.

In 1585 Thomas married Elizabeth the daughter of William Dethick, gentleman of Obden in Wychbold. Thomas, described as a gentleman, is frequently mentioned in Winslow documents. He had leased a salt bullary from Edward Winslow senior in 1606. This would have given him the right to the salt produced by this bullary. Also in that year the husband of his sister Eleanor died. Eleanor had married John Yarnold of Hadzor in 1577. In his will, John had made provision for his children, ‘placing them in the hands of their uncle Thomas Gower of Droitwich gentleman’. John and Eleanor had a son Gower Yarnold who had left his wife and children to travel to Ireland where he was taken ill. He died in Dublin in 1614 and was buried in St Patrick’s church. He asked his uncle Thomas Gower to look after financial matters for his wife and children.

Thomas was one of the burgesses of Droitwich. This meant that he had rights to shares in the brine from Upwich and Netherwich pits. This brine was boiled to produce salt, which was a valuable commodity. In 1608 there was a grant from John Allen of Droitwich, gent, to Thomas Trymnell of Oakley and Thomas Gower, gent. of a house and land in Droitwich, a salt pit and a quarter of a bullary of salt water in Upwich and part of a house in St. Andrews parish, to hold in trust. Thomas bought a property in the High Street on the corner of Leadsmiths Lane (Gurneys Lane), from Richard Foster and his son Francis, gentlemen of Droitwich.

Thomas and Elizabeth had five sons: Thomas junior, John, Francis, Richard and Philip. The eldest son, Thomas, married Margery the daughter of Henry Harris of Droitwich. Her father had salt interests too, like Thomas. Salt rights could not be bought and sold and were inherited or passed to a husband when he married an heiress. Their second son, John, married Alice Barrett in 1623 at St. Peter’s church. She was the daughter of Edward Barrett, another gentleman of Droitwich. Edward owned several bullaries of brine and was a burgess, being made bailiff at least three times. Edward paid £200 to John as Alice’s marriage portion. Before he died in 1619, Thomas senior had leased his property in the High Street to his son John. John’s mother, Elizabeth, died in 1624, the same year that a leasing agreement was made between John Gower and Edward Barrett and William Andrews. It describes a ‘great messuage or tenement’ in the High Street and mentions halls, chambers, rooms, solars, cellars, houses, edifices, buildings, stables, backsides, ways, entries, outhouses, yards and gardens, together with two seals (flimsy salt making shelters) and a hovel and three cribs (buildings to store the salt in). The land at the rear ran back to the River Salwarpe not far from the Upwich pit on the north bank of the river. This is now 31, 33 and 35 High Street.

John and Alice had four children: Thomas, John junior, Edward and Elizabeth. John senior became a bailiff in 1631 alongside Robert Wheeler. John sadly died in 1642. In his will he asks his wife to look after his children, who were all minors. Only John junior and Elizabeth survived to adulthood; John marrying Elizabeth Davies and Elizabeth marrying Jonas Hanbury. John’s two sons died before they had children and so this line of the Gower family ended.

The will of Francis Yarnell was probated June 2, 1721 in Chester Co., Pennsylvania.

Francis Yarnall and his brother Philip came to America in 1683, a year after William Penn had taken possession of the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

Francis Yarnall first settled in Springfield Township, Chester County, Pennsylvania on a tract of one hundred acres of land which had been surveyed to him on 17 Oct 1683 and patented February 6, 1683. This was about a mile from Springfield meeting of the Society of Friends on the road to Clifton.

Subsequently, Francis purchased 510 acres in Willistown Township adding the land of Edgemont and extending westward from Crum Creek nearly two miles.

November, 28, 1703 he obtained a patent for 400 acres next to the Indians' lands in Willistown township. He there continued to reside until his death in 1721, in old records he is spoken of as "of Stone Creek head". He had been identified with the Society of Friends before leaving England and he continued in affiliation with that society throughout the period of his life. he was a member first of Darby Monthly Meeting and later of Chester Monthly Meeting.

He was chosen a member of the Provincial Assembly in 1711 as a representative from Chester county and must have been a man of influence and ability, for men of Mediocre talents were rarely chosen as legislators in Colonial days. he was a young man when he came to America and he spent three years after his arrival in the New World in the development of a home and the acquiring of some little wealth before entering the bound of wedlock.

Finally in l686 he married Hannah Baker by whom he had nine children to-wit: Sarah, John, Peter, Moses, Francis, Joseph, Amos, Daniel, and Mordecai.

The representatives of these branches have been very numerous.

Daniel Yarnall, who was born September 1, 1703, and died December 24, 1726, was the only one of the nine who did not marry.

Sarah Yarnall was born July 28 1687, was married to Samuel Askew.

John yarnall was born 24 Dec 1688, was twice married first to Ann Coppock and secondly to Jane Thomas. john was elected county commission of Chester county in 1741.

Peter Yarnall the next younger brother, who was born in October 1690 , married Alice Worrilow.

Moses yarnall, who was born in October, 1682, married Dowse Davis, a son of the latter David Yarnall was by his wife Sarah, the father of Priscilla yarnall who married Francis Townsend, born November 17, 1764, died December 16, 1816. A grandson of Joseph Townsend who came to Pennsylvania about 1715 and a grand-nephew of Richard Townsend, a fellow passenger with William Penn on the "Welcome" in 1682.

it was the marriage of Priscilla that connected these two of the oldest families of Pennsylvania.

The Townsend family are among the most eminent citizens of Pennsylvania. Washington Townsend, born January 20, 1813, died March 18, 1894, served four terms in Congress from Chester County, and was otherwise a noted figure in public life.

Francis Yarnall, fourth son, was born February 24, 1694, and like the Elder Yarnall was a member of Pennsylvania Assembly, and was returned annually from 1743 to 1748, both inclusive. In 1755 he was a contributor to the Pennsylvania hospital. He was twice married; first to Mary Baker and secondly to Mary Morris.

Joseph Yarnall was born Jul 13, 1697, married Mary Townsend, who was born Jul 15, 1702. She was the widow of Amos Townsend. Joseph moved to Philadelphia and was of the earliest of the Yarnalls to establish himself in the Quaker city.

Amos Yarnall, who was born March 26, 1700 was a man of prominence in Chester County where he was born, lived, and where he died December 4, 1789, and where his descendants continue to occupy the original grant of 500 acres in the lower part of the township of Williston and for which he received a warrant August 2, 1737.

The Youngest child of Francis Yarnall, Mordecai, was born September 11, 1705, and in conjunction with his brother Amos, received a warrant for 500 acres in Willistown township, patents for the same being issued January 29, 1738, ten years later, he removed to Philadelphia. He was a noted Minister of the Society of Friends and his descendants were all men and women of prominence in public affairs.

In 1769 he removed to his native Chester County, settling in Springfield where he died May 17, 1782. He was three times married, first in 1733 to Catherine Meredith whose death took place in 1741. August 8, 1745 he married Mary Roberts, daughter of Edward Roberts, May of Philadelphia from 1739 to 1740. Following the death of his second wife, he married March 3, 1768 Ann Maris, widow of Joseph Maris.

There is no real evidence for Joseph to be the son of Thomas and Nancy Densman. He is the right age to take the place of a male child on the 1830 census of Thomas and his family. Joseph always stated that his father was from Pennsylvania. There is no evidence of Joseph on the 1850 census. But I suspect that he left for the 1849 gold rush to California. And when that did not pan out he moved to Oregon where he shows up on the 1853, 1854, and 1858 state census records. He shows up on the 1860 census for Jacksonville, Jackson County, Oregon census. And he is still there in 1870 but he is now married. The census is faded, but I believe that I have it correct. By 1880 he is living in Douglas County, but still a miner but he is not longer married either through divorce or death. His son is no longer with him and I suspect he was dead. In 1893 he again married this time to Gustine Nixon and in 1900 they are living in Perdue, Douglas. In 1910 they are living in Logan County, Arkansas; the home of Gustine.

Like his brother, Thomas he was a miner. And in one of the census records (1900?) Thomas is visiting Joseph in Oregon and shows up on the census.
