Philippsthal was not really a new village, but an old village with a new name. There was a monastary since 1191 and a village, both called Kreuzberg. After the Reformation ("Martin Luther") the monastary was liquidated and
1685 "Landgraf" Philipp started to build a new castle. He gave the castle his name. His son built about 1730 the most parts of the castle "Philippsthal" (Philipp's valley) and since about 1770 the village Kreuzberg also was called Philippsthal.

Christopher Schlotzhauer, section 10, is one among the pioneers of Northwestern Missouri. His parents, Rudolph and Christiana, were both natives of Germany. Christopher was born April 12, 1828, in that country. He crossed the ocean with his parents about 1835, and landed at New Orleans. After remaining some two years in Louisiana, they came by steamboat to St. Louis and thence to Boonville, Cooper county, Missouri, thence when the subject of this sketch was reared to manhood, spending his boyhood days on the farm and receiving fair educational advantages.

He helped to clear two farms in that densely wooded locality, and when 17, he commenced to learn the carpenter trade, which he followed for several years. In the spring of 1864, he came to Holt county and settled where he now resides. He has since been engaged in agricultural pursuits and at present owns 150 acres of well improved land. He is farm is well watered by two falling springs and a branch. Curzon Station, on the Kansas City, St. Joseph, and Council Bluffs Railroad, is only a short distance from his residence.

In May, 1881, Mr. S purchased the steam saw-mill located at that point. This mill does as much business as any in the county, is complete in its appointments, and when crowed is capable of outing ten thousand feet per day. Mr. S is a very enterprising and energetic citizen. Politically, he is an Independent Republican and formerly voted the old Whig ticket.

He was married on the 9th of April, 1848, to Miss Dorothy Snider, daughter of John P. Snider. They have had eight children, six of whom are living: Sarah E., b. Jan. 24, 1849, (now Mrs. Jacob Markt of Oregon, MO), Rudolph, b. Nov. 13, 1850, Phillip, b. Mar. 30, 1856, John, b. Oct. 8, 1858, Christopher, b. Sept. 13. 1862, Julia A., b. July 3, 1865.

Mr. S. and wife are active members of the Herman M.E. Church. He has filled the position of a local preacher in this church for some 25 years.

Rudolph Schlotzhauer was was born in Cooper county, Missouri, in 1850, and in 1866, came to Oregon. After attending school for some time, he entered the Sentinel office in Oregon, and learned the printing business, at which he worked for ten years.

He married Miss Elizabeth B. A. Kunkel in 1876. She was the daughter of Daniel Kunkel, of this city. They have two children, Ina Alberta and Morton Virner.

In 1878, Mr. Schlotzhauer abandoned the printing business and entered the mill and factory of Daniel Kunkel, with whom he has since remained.

In the winter of 1882, Mr. Kunkel sold the mill and factory to three of his sons and the subject of this sketch. They are doing an excellent business, obtaining large quantities of wheat, and manufacturing fine breads of flour. Many of the neighboring towns are supplied by them. Mr. R in an industrious man, and has host of friends.

Julia A Gifford died at the Hillside Rest Home on North 7th St., St. Joseph, MO, on April 15, 1957 after fracturing her hip on February 15 at the family farm in Oregon, Missouri. According to her death certificate, she "caught her coat on a gate latch and fell in the yard," which contributed to her death. She's also listed as having atherosclerosis.

She was married to Winfield Scott Gifford, who preceded in her death.

The couple had lived in my home on South 12th St., St. Joseph until Winfield died on December 17, 1930. Afterward, Julia moved to 2229 Doniphan Ave..

Julia's father was Christopher Schlotzhauer and her mother was Dorothy Synder. The informant on her death certificate was Dr. B. F. Gifford of Country Club Place, St. Joseph. His relationship to Julia is unknown.

Julia was attended by the Heaton Bowman Funeral Home in St. Joseph. She and Winfield are buried at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Oregon Missouri.

Louise (Lulu) Helen Schlotzhauer, oldest daughter and second child in the family of eight children of John and Fredricka Masel Schlotzhauer, was born on the farm near Harris Station southwest of Pilot Grove in Cooper County, Missouri on January 16, 1865. The railroad was under construction there and the wife of one of the construction workers named her after herself. Later that year, in November 1865, her parents purchased the 127 acre farm and it became known as "the home place". It is now owned and the residence of Marcin Schupp and his wife. Here Lulu Schlotzhauer grew up. She attended the Pleasant Green rural school and Johnston's School in Pilot Grove. The family was active in the affairs centered around Wesley Chapel Church.

On October 19, 1884, Lulu Schlotzhauer was married to Hamilton Lusk. They were married at Wesley Chapel by E. L. Frazier, a minister.

Marshall Lusk served two years in the United States Army Signal Corps during World War I. After his discharge in 1919, he joined his brother, Boyd in the grain commission business in St Louis. He continued to be a grain broker and member of the Board of Trade in St Louis until his retirement in 1960. He was married in St Louis to Georgia Wooldridge, daughter of William J. and Lily Hooper Wooldridge, prominent residents of the Wooldridge community of Cooper County. They had no children. They lived in Florida after his retirement until 1972 when they returned to Boonville. Georgia died in December 1975 and Marshall Lusk died October 13, 1976 at the age of 82. Both were buried in the Pilot Grove Cemetery.

Laura Gail Schler, 97, of Boonville, died Thursday, January 9, 2014, at her home.

She was born June 25, 1916, in Pilot Grove, to Elmer J. and Alma Schlotzhauer Stegner. On December 29, 1940, in Pilot Grove, she was married to Henry H. Schler, who preceded her in death. She grew up in the Pilot Grove community, moving to Boonville in 1943. She was a member of the Evangelical United Church of Christ in Boonville.

She is survived by two daughters-Carolyn Snell of Sacramento, CA; Rosamond Schler of Denver, CO; one son-Warner Schler of Platt City, MO; three grandchildren-Bradley (Amy) Schler; Lyndel (Jim) Colwell; and Crystal (Larry) Cooper; 4 great grandchildren; one sister-Lorene Wolfe of Pilot Grove; two brothers-Leroy Stegner of Pilot Grove; and Henry Stegner of Marthasville, MO.

She was preceded in death her parents, her husband, one brother-Rudy Stegner and one sister, Wanda Phillips.

Funeral services for Ms. Schler will be 10 AM, Tuesday, January 14, 2014, at the Meisenheimer Funeral Home in Pilot Grove. Burial will be in the St. John's Cemetery in Billingsville.

Visitation will be from 5:00 to 7:00 PM, Monday evening at the Meisenheimer Funeral Home in Pilot Grove.

Stanley LeRoy Stegner, age 95 of Pilot Grove, Missouri passed away Friday afternoon, November 29, 2019 surrounded by his loving family. LeRoy was born January 28, 1924 to Elmer and Alma Stegner in Pilot Grove where he has been a lifelong resident.

LeRoy, a WWII veteran, served his country in the US Navy, stationed in Hawaii. He married a local girl, Betty Ann Selbach, February 20, 1955 at Wesley Chapel. He was a lifetime member of that church and at one time served as Sunday School superintendent. He and Betty were blessed with four sons and one daughter.

LeRoy was a lifelong farmer in counties of Cooper, Howard, Warren and Pettis. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Ozark National Life Insurance and ICH Company for 27 years. He was an active member of the Pilot Grove American Legion and also served on the Cooper County Missouri Farm Bureau Board of Directors for 37 years.

Preceding Stanley LeRoy Stegner in death were his parents; his brother Rudy Stegner of Lamonte; sisters Laura Gail Schler of Boonville and Wanda Phillips of Pilot Grove.

Surviving LeRoy are his wife Betty of the home; children Judy Foglio (Mike) of Lee's Summit, Mo., Mike (Brenda)Stegner, Pleasant Hill, Mo., Mitchell (Donna)Stegner, Pilot Grove, Mo., Miles Stegner, Pilot Grove, Mo., Monty (Christy) Stegner, Blackwater, Mo.; grandchildren Mathew Stegner, James Stegner, Christopher (Haley) Foglio, Todd Stegner, Patrick (Krysteena) Foglio, Kyle (Angela) Stegner, Brittany Stegner, Dalten (Allie) Stegner, Alexis Stegner, Dayten Stegner, Camiren Stegner, Ella Stegner and Romi Stegner; two great grandchildren Bryce Stegner and Hadleigh Stegner; his brother Henry Stegner, Marthasville, Mo. and sister Loraine Wolfe, Pilot Grove, Mo.

She married Edward Loesing on February 17, 1945. Earlene worked in banking at the Citizens Bank in Pilot Grove and Kemper State Bank in Boonville. She helped with the farming operation with her husband until his death in 2005. She remained on the farm until her death and continued to manage and stay active with the farm. She loved to cook and enjoyed feeding anyone who visited. She and Edward were active members of Immanuel Lutheran Church throughout their marriage. Earlene was loved, admired, and respected by her family. She is survived by and will be greatly missed by her six children, Janice (Don Lang) of Columbia, Beth (Lloyd Copenhaver) of Aiken SC, Judy (Rich Grant) of Columbia, Betty (Larry Schuster) of Columbia, Gloria (Dennis Stephenson) of Rocheport, and Dale (Ann Brinkmann) of Washington, MO. She held a special place in the hearts of fourteen grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren.
