If I could figure out the abbreviation for the month, we may get the complete date of their marriage.  The whole inscription is hard to decipher but here’s my first impression — “The honorable Herr Andreas Reynman pastor — of Graba himself with the — Maiden [ Jungfrau ] Sabina Trÿllerin. [ the daughter of ] Samuel Trÿller shoemaker [ Schuster ] of Saalfeld . . . ”  It looks like the couple got married one Tuesday [ Dienstag ] at a place called “Salwalde”.   That would be Saalwald — “Saal Forest”.  I looked for it on the old maps — well, as you know, Graba is north of the walled city of Saalfeld, both on the same side of the Saal River, and the Saalwald is all around both places in the west, the south and the southeast, as you’ll see from the 2021 map from Mindat.org, so, maybe, the couple got married in the forest, and not in Saalfeld.

They were married on 18 May 1585, which under the Julian calendar would have been a Tuesday.  As to the place, a forest.  Now I agree that I could make that read Saalwald, but a forest?  If this was during the 30 years was with Lutheran pastors dying, I can believe they got married in a forest.  But in1585?

That’s why I was thinking that Saalwald might be the name of either a farm or an estate but it’s so hard to find it in the old maps of the Saalfeld area.

Hello Jim,

I took from his funeral sermon that he arrived in Regensburg with his family on October 8, 1641.
I assume that this is correct, because in August 1641 he already held two trial sermons in Regensburg.
Two months later he stayed there until the end of his life.

I received the following information from the Greiz State Archives:

„M. Andreas Steiner was quite obviously pastor in Zeulenroda for only about 1 year. There are no parish records for Zeulenroda from this period. He succeeded M. Daniel Müller,
who went to Greiz as archdeacon in September 1640. Probably at the end of October or beginning of November 1640 he began his work in Zeulenroda. In August 1641 he already
held 2 trial sermons in Regensburg at the request of the Regensburg city council and then probably went to Regensburg in the fall of 1641.“

There is one source that claims that Andreas had a second wife, Rosina Bernhardina Emhard. However this is disproved and an identical marriage to another Steiner; with children being born with identical names some 200 years to the day apart. Addition in Andreas Steiner’s funeral sermon Elisabetha is referred to as his widow.

In total they had nine children, but by the time of Andreas’s death three daughters were no longer alive

According to the parish records of St. Andreas, Eisleben the marriage date is 09 Nov 1617.

The Möschlitz church registers (Schleiz church district) have been filmed and can already be viewed in digital form in our reading room. But they cannot yet be seen online in the church register portal www.archion.de.
However, our film adaptations (and thus also the digitized versions) of Möschlitz only begin around 1677. Unfortunately, we are not aware of any older books from around 1623 to 1640.

“Fraenk. marckgrefl. Pfar- und Pfrindtverwalther in Hof” is the windy way to say that Georg Steiner was the assistant pastor from the North Court of the Margrave of Brandenburg-Bayreuth.

“Pfrindt” is an old German word for “sinecure”, meaning that, because Steiner was just an assistant pastor, he was on half-pay while the senior pastor was on full pay.  “Fraenk. marckgrefl.” is an old abbreviation for fränkische markgräfliche, meaning that Rev. Steiner’s boss was the Margrave of Franconia.  Since 1398, it had been the traditional title of the Princes of Bayreuth, who controlled Franconia, and held by the Margraves of Brandenburg, who were already margraves by 1398.  The Principality had two administrative towns for the Oberland and the Unterland.  One of them was Hof, which was responsible for the Oberland, the northern highlands, including Bayreuth and the Saale River.  As you’ll see from the following map, the Oberland of the Principality was one of the neighbors of Saxe-Coburg.

Buchenröder ( Michael ), an Evangelical Jubilee-Pastor and son of the preceding, was born in Friesau on 14 Dec. AD 1642.  He laid the foundation of his studies in Schleusingen and Coburg, and in AD 1662 he attended the University at Leipzig, and the following year, at Jena, afterwards made a journey to Holland in AD 1664, taught young people in AD 1666 in Frankfort am Main, became in Guttenberg Informator [ private tutor ] of the Nobility, and in AD 1668 traveled to Dünckelspiel [ Dinkelsbühl, Bavaria ], of which his cousin was Senior Pastor.  From this place he sent in the Vocation by the pious Duke Ernst of Gotha, to the Parish of Lindenau bei Heldburg, but was transferred AD 1679 to Hellingen, and AD 1690 to Rappenshausen, and, finally, AD 1700, Pastor of Biberschlag and Schwartzbach in the Eisfeld area.  He still lived until AD 1721, when he had already been in the ministry for 35 years.  His son Johann Christoph substituted for him in AD 1717.  [ Rev. He was baptized as Georg Achatig Buchenröder but his middle name was switched to Achatius because it was the Latinized surname of his only godparent, Georg Achatz Heher, JD ( 1601 – 1667 ), the German jurist, diplomat and administrator from Nuremberg.  When Michael’s son was born, Herr Heher had been living and working in Heldburg as the Oberamtmann [ senior bailiff ] of four districts, including Heldburg and Eisfeld, since 1648, when he was appointed by Ernst I, the Duke of Saxe-Gotha.  Herr Heher is famous enough to have his biography in the German Wikipedia ( https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Georg_Achatz_Heher ) but, since it is not available in English, here is my English translation :

Georg Achatz Heher ( also Achatius ; born 30 December 1601 in Nuremberg; † 22 May 1667 in Rudolstadt ) was a German lawyer, diplomat and chancellor.

Heher was a son of the lawyer and diplomat Georg Heher.  He first grew up with his grandfather [ Hülsin ] in Altdorf near Nuremberg.  From 1616 to 1620 he attended the University of Altdorf, then followed his father to Vienna, who represented the Evangelical cities of the Swabian Circle there.  There he came into contact with diplomacy.  After returning to the University of Jena, he returned to Altdorf in 1623.  In Altdorf he finally received his doctorate in law.

Heher settled in Nuremberg in 1624 as a lawyer.  In 1625 he was sent to Vienna.  There he received an audience with Emperor Ferdinand II on 25 August 1635.  Other embassies followed.  In 1629 he came to [ the Free Imperial City of ] Speyer and then toured Switzerland, France and Italy.  At the same time, he completed a career as a courtier.  In 1628 he became an assessor at the Lower Court in Nuremberg and a consultant in Altmühl, then in 1630 a Municipal Court consultant in Nuremberg.

In 1632, Heher accepted an appointment as Hofrat [ Court Councilor ] in [ the Prince-Bishopric of ] Würzburg, but in 1633 he went to Regensburg as Vice Chancellor and Director of the War Chancellery.  After the Swedish defeat, he was able to return to Nuremberg in 1636, where he again hired himself out as a consultant, with the German Order as one of his clients.

Life
Thomae was born on 5 April 1668 in Heldburg at the house of his grandfather. His father was Stephan Thomae, the pastor of Wiesenfeld and later of Neuhaus and Sonnefeld. His mother was Cordula Buchenröder, the daughter of the Superintendent Michael Buchenröder. In 1682, Thomae was admitted into the Hochfürstliche Gymnasium in Coburg. From 1688 he studied at the University of Jena. After graduation, he worked as a teacher. In 1697, he was appointed as the Rector for the parish of Neustadt bei Coburg. In 1722 ( ins XXVI. On 2 November 1717, an “Actus oratorius” [ oratorical ] took place in Neustadt to celebrate the “Jubilaeum Lutheranum Secundum” [ Luther Bicentennial ], designed by the rector of the town school Johann Christian Thomae.  Among other things, in the church, a number of boys were told about the life and deeds of Luther to his death and burial.  This process — as reported by Albrecht Meno Verpoorten, the then superintendent of Neustadt, in the preface to Thomae's Licht im Abend [ “Light in the Evening” ] — prompted good friends to propose that the speeches should be published with explanations.  In this way, as Verpoorten continues, especially since there were not any particular accounts about the Reformation in Coburg, in Thomae the idea of “collecting the information about churches and schools, which are available since the Reformation, as much as possible, and thus to preserve the same against destruction or oblivion, and to facilitate the same work for the descendants [ die noch bey Handen habende Nachrichten von Kirchen und Schulen, seit der Reformation, so viel thunlich, zu samlen, mithin dieselbe vor gäntzlicher Zernichtung oder Vergessenheit desto eher zu bewahren, und den Nachkommen dergleichen Arbeit zu erleichtern ].”  “It seems to me”, writes the Rector himself, “as an irresponsible impertinence against God, if we did not endeavor to preserve the blessings of our leaders, who have now been announcing the Word of God to us for two hundred years [ Mir kam es, als eine unverantwortliche Undanckbarheit gegen Gott vor, wenn wir nicht das Andencken unserer Lehrer, die uns nun zwenhundert Jahr das Wort Gottes verkündiget, im Segen zu erhalten uns bemühen wollten ].”  The will turned into action, and a work came to light, which was at the core of a description of the lives of the Evangelical preachers and city schools and colleges in the Principality of Coburg, as well as yielding a rich trove to the friends of history as well as explorers of biography, and whose value as a reference will not fade away.

The outer life of Johann Christian Thomaes lacks remarkable experiences.  In the house of his grandfather, the superintendent Buchenröder, he was born in Heldburg in 1668 ( 5 April ).  His father, Stephan Thomae, was a pastor in Wiesenfeld, on his maternal side he could trace the family tree back to the Coburger Superintendent Dr. Maximilian Mörlin.  A student at the Casimirianum in Coburg from 1682, he went to Jena in 1688 and followed his call as a rector to Neustadt in 1697.  As for his activities as a teacher, we learn from the description of one's life, written by General-Superintendent Erdmann Rudolph Fischer.  In 1701, Fischer went to the school in Neustadt.  “Everywhere I go,” he continues, “I have enjoyed the faithful teaching of the frail but skillful and untroubled Rector, Johann Christian Thomae, of Latin, Greek, and Hebrew, to my great benefit [ Allwo ich, des treuen Unterrichts des, dem Leibe nach gebrechlichen, aber sehr geschickten und unverdrossenen Rectoris, Herrn Johann Christian Thomae im Lateinischen, Griechischen und Hebraeischen, zu meinem großen Nutzen genossen ].”  A lengthy stay of the Rector in the sickbed caused this schoolmaster to retire from Neustadt earlier than he wanted.  “For under Him,” he adds, “I could have done so much more [ Denn unter ihm, hätte ich noch vieles vor mich bringen können ].”  In the Rectory, Thomae died, almost fifty-six, in 1724 ( 19 March ).

I'm glad to hear that, even though your eyes are getting bleary from slogging through "Licht am Abend", you're as happy as a bug in a rug. Well, you'll be happy to know that I have finished the English translation of the biography of Stephen Thomas Thomä. As a cradle Catholic, I'm not familiar with the Reformation terminology so it took me a while to figure out what the heck did Rev. Christian Thomä meant by this and that. So that's what he meant when he wrote that Father "informed the oldest sons"! He was actually home-schooling them, including Stephen Thomas. "Convictorio" was a term used to describe a pastor's assignment and service. Johann Christian Thomä's biography is two pages long so it'll take a while to translate it into English.

But, first, a couple of words - As you probably know from my English translation of the Hildburghausen timetable, the Church of St Lorenz was the main church of the town but it was destroyed by the Great Fire of 1779. "U.L. Frauen" is the holdover from the Catholic past of Hildburghausen. It's short for "Unsere Liebe Frauen", German for "Our Blessed Lady", who is of course the Virgin Mary, the Mother of God. But this church doesn't exist anymore, too. They were both replaced by the present Evangelical Churches - the Christus and the Neustadter - and the Catholic Church of St Leopold.

But I did find a couple of things.  One of them is the 1684 christening record of Johann Wolfgang Buchenröder, the stillborn son of Johann Buchenröder.  It is not completely transcribed but it is enough to show that he had been born in Sonnefeld, probably at the home of Stephan Thomæ, whose wife was one of the four godparents.  Christian Michael Buchenröder was the pastor of nearby Hellingen at that time but, as one of the other godparents, his wife was not listed as Barbara.  She was Margaretha.  But John Nicholas Kalb’s wife, Christina Rose Stegner, had Magaretha Barbara as her middle names so maybe Margaretha Bauer Buchenröder was really Margaretha Barbara Bauer Buchenröder.

The house is a clay and lattice framework. It size is due to the so-call Tropical House and stands with the gable side facing towards Wiedhausen. In the church records for the death of Johann Ludwig Thomæ it lists his survivors. It lists his two sons Lorenz and Lorenz; five daughters Anna Margaretha, Barbara, Margaretha Barbara, and Dorothea. It the church records it lists a Lorenz Thomæ Sr. and a Lorenz Thomæ, Jr. While I have always thought this to be a father son relationship, it is not. Instead it refers to the two Lorenzs in the same family.

But then I noticed that, in 1853 and 1854, the Regierungs- und Intelligenzblatt für das Herzogthum Coburg [Admininstrative and Intelligence Bulletin for the Duchy of Coburg] was running announcements about the people who were leaving Sonnefeld, Frohnlach and Ebersdorf for "Nordamerika". On Issue No. 66, Saturday, 19 August 1854, it mentioned two of your ancestors, side by side, on the same page. I've attached for you the copy of the top halves of the two pages in the original German. Here is the English translation of the following announcements:

E. G. Thoma is much pleased over the result of his exhibit of barred Plymouth Rock chickens at the State Fair at Sedalia last week. He had eight birds there and won two blue and two red ribbons and the cash premiums that accompanied them. he was awarded first and second on pullet and the same on cockerel. the competition was very strong, there being birds from some seven different states.

In 1778 Johann Paul Thomæ was living in House 51a in Hofstädten. In 1811 after the death of Johann Paul it came into the possession of Johann Ernst Thomæ and his wife Sabine. After the death of Maria Savina nee’ Bechmann Thomæ in into the possession of Johann Ludwig Thomæ. And Barbara Thomæ was awarded the Brennhaus. In 1835 Johann Ludwig came into possession of both House 51a and 51b. In 1852 the house came into the possession of Lorenz Thomæ, Sr. and in 1844 passed into the house of Lorenz Thomæ, Jr. Finally in 1854 it came into the possession of Ludwig Thomæ, Sr. (the father of the potter). Then in 1855 in passed to Margaretha Thomæ and her brothers and sisters.

My ancestor Johann (Stephen) Thomey who served in the US civil war served in the 68 New York infantry (1st brigade). He was at Gettysburg. You asked when we spoke who he served under. The 68 infantry was under Colonel Gotthiff Von Bourg d 'lvernois. The First brigade was under Colonel Leopold Von Gilsa,

The 68th NY infantry was based out of NYC (lower east side) from German decent people. Stephen Thomey died in 1887 at NYC. He is buried with wife Anna at Lutheran Cemetery in Middle Village NY. He is listed on his service record as a cook. I do not know how much action he participated in since at Gettysburg he was 40 years old.
He filed for service pension in 1886 which he did not receive. His wife Anna hired an pension attorney in which she won appeal in 1890. She received $ 8.00 a month till she died in 1898.
