Notes - From Chip Kalb
01 = Urban Schmidt
02 = Georg Schmidt, alias Triller, charcoal burner of Grünhain, Saxony, 1455, and “Der Prinzenretter” = Maria Wälder
03 = George Triller, Pülvermacher [ powder maker ], moved to Freyberg ( now Freiberg, District of Mittlelsachsen, Saxony, Germany ), the center of ore mining for centuries, in the Electorate of Saxony and had two sons — Burchard Triller, the Pülvermacher [ powder maker ] who stayed in Freyberg and became the ancestor of Dr Daniel Wilhelm Triller of Usingen, Hesse, and Peter Triller, who left for Torgau. When Princes Ernst and Albrecht divided their father’s lands in 1485, Freiberg went with the Duchy of Saxony to Albrecht. But Grünhain, Graba, Saafeld and Torgau, along with Coburg, Hildburghausen, Frohnlach and Sonnefeld, all went with the Electorate of Saxony to Ernst. Torgau itself became the principal residence of Ernst’s two sons, Frederick the Wise and John the Steadfast, and John’s son, John Frederick the Maganimous. It was also the epicenter of the Reformation. Of it, Martin Luther wrote, “Wittenberg ist die Mutter, Torgau die Amme der Reformation [ Wittenberg is the mother, Torgau the wet-nurse of the Reformation ]”
THE TORGAU BRANCH
04 = Peter Triller ( 1482 – 1512 ) of Torgau = Anna Gotthard
05 = Justus Triller, the youngest son, moved from Torgau to Saalfeld, where he became a Bürger [ citizen ] in 1504, and had twelve daughters and two sons — Simon Tryller, who founded the Saalfeld branch, and Rev. Caspar Tryller ( 1497 – 1561 ), the first Evangelical Lutheran pastor of Graba, who founded the Graba branch
THE SAALFELD BRANCH
06 = Simon Tryller ( 1496, Saalfeld – 14 Dec 1576, Saalfeld ), Beutlermeister [ master maker of leather purses and gloves ] = ( 1 ) Katharina Gärtner ( + 25 Oct 1566, Saalfeld ), daughter of Matthias Gärtner the Rathsherr [ City Councilor ] of Saalfeld, 11 children ( eight boys, three girls )
07 = Sebastian Tryller ( 1524, Saalfeld – 1 Nov 1574, Saalfeld ), the fourth son = 21 Oct 1549, Saalfeld, Cordula Schaden ( + 3 Dec 1578, Saalfeld ), the daughter of Hans Schaden the Kastner [ landlord’s administrator, or beady-eyed bean-counter ] from Eisfeld in Thuringen, 11 children ( five boys, six girls ), the eldest of which was
08 = Samuel Tryller ( 22 Sep 1550, Saalfeld – 28 Feb 1608, Saalfeld ), merchant, the Rathsherr [ City Councilor ] and later Rathskämmerer [ City Chamberlain ] of Saalfeld
09 = Sabina Tryller ( * 1 Apr 1565, Saalfeld ) = 1685, Rev Andreas Reinmann, the fourth Evangelical Lutheran pastor of Graba
Sabina’s marriage record states that she was the daughter of Samuel Tryller the shoemaker ( Schuster ) of Saalfeld but the only Samuel Tryller I could find at Geneanet was Samuel Tryller ( 1550 – 1608 ), the Kaufmann [ merchant ] of Saalfeld. This Samuel is supposed to have married twice, both times in Saalfeld — to Ottilie Winzterlein, who died without issue, and, in 1583, Judith Müller, the daughter of Nicolaus Müller. She bore him six children — two boys and four girls — but none of them was Sabina. Compared to Judith, there’s nothing about Ottilie. But I note that Samuel the merchant was 15 years old when Sabina was born. Maybe he had a scandalous fling with Ottilie but she died in childbirth and their baby was adopted as Sebastian’s daughter to keep her biological father’s secret.
But there may be two different Tryller families in the same town. The first Evangelical Lutheran Deacon of Graba was Sebastian Tryller but he got the job in 1520 — four years before the other Sebastian was born in nearby Saalfeld. Perhaps the Deacon was Peter’s son. He’s not in the tables and Geneanet but Peter did live in Torgau, the epicenter of the Reformation. So I gotta read through the Triller-Sagen, which covers your Tryllers on pages 15 – 18, and “Der Prinzenraub und die Familie Triller” to be sure.
