    Notes:

Henry I, Count of Eu and Lord of Hastings (ca. 1075-12 July 1140) was the son of William II, Count of Eu, and his wife Helisende d'Avranches was the sister of Hugh d'Avranches, Earl of Chester. Henry descended from Richard I, Duke of Normandy. His father died in 1096, having revolted against King William II of England.

As the eldest son, Henry succeeded William as Count of Eu and Lord of Hastings. In 1101, he supported Duke Robert Curthose against his brother Henry Beauclerc who has just seized the English throne. Robert left Tréport, the domain of the county of Eu, to invade England. Orderic Vitalis reports that in 1104, while still in Normandy, Henry submitted to the English king. He fought for the king at the Battle of Tinchebray in 1106, where Duke Robert was taken prisoner, to remain in captivity for the rest of his life.

Henry the joined to cause of William Clito, the son of Duke Robert, in the coalition composed of Baldwin VII of Flanders, Fulk V of Anjou, and Louis VI the Fat. In 1117, Henry and Hugh de Gournay were arrested at Rouen by Henry I. On the promise of good behaviour and at the request of William de Warenne, they were released. Nevertheless, Henry and Hugh, joining with Stephen of Aumale, led a rebellion in the northeast and provided military support to Baldwin VI. The rebellion ended in September 1118 at the Battle of Bures-en-Brai, where Baldwin was mortally wounded. Henry returned to the side of King Henry I.

A few months later, on August 20, 1119, Henry was one several barons who accompanied King Henry I when a meeting of the Norman and French royal armies gave rise to the Battle of Brémule. The French were swept away, and Louis VI had to flee and take refuge in the fortress of Les Andelys. In the following month, he took part in the defense of the town of Breteuil, which was attacked by the French king and his ally Amaury III of Montfort. Once again, the French were defeated. In 1124, William of Grandcourt, one of Henry's sons, took part in the ambush at Bourgtheroulde.. He captured Amaury III of Montfort, but chose to desert rather than hand him over to Henry I. In 1127, Henry again openly supported William Clito.

Henry first married Mathilde and secondly Hermentrude, both of unknown families. He married thirdly Marguerite de Sully, daughter of William the Simple, Count of Sully, and his wife Agnes.
Henry and Marguerite had four children:
    1. John, Count of Eu and Lord of Hastings
    2. Béatrice of Eu
    3. Mathilde (Mahout) of Eu (d. 1153)
    4. Stephen (Etienne) of Eu (d. after 1140).

5.William of Grandcourt (d. 1150 or after) was also a son of Henry's but likely illegitimate.

Henry founded the Savignian abbey of Foucarmont in 1129, now known as La Fontaine Saint Martin. Henry embraced a religious life by becoming the Augustinian canon of the abbey Notre-Dame d'Eu. His death is marked on 12 July in the obituary of the abbey of Foucarmont, where he is buried.

Upon Henry's death, his son John became Count of Eu and Lord of Hastings.

    Notes:

William II, Count of Eu, feudal baron of Hastings (died about 1095)[1] was a first generation Anglo-Norman nobleman, Count of Eu and rebel.

    Origins

According to most authorities he was the son and heir of Robert, Count of Eu,[a] (died before 1093), by his wife Beatrix de Falaise.

    Career

William of Eu held about seventy-seven manors in the west of England and was one of the rebels against King William II of England in 1088. Although he made his peace with that King, together with William of Aldrie (his wife's nephew), Roger de Lacy and Robert de Mowbray, he conspired to murder William II and to replace him on the throne with Stephen of Aumale, the King's cousin.

In 1095 the rebels impounded four Norwegian trading ships and refused the King's demand to return the merchandise. King William conducted a lightning campaign, outflanking the rebels at Newcastle upon Tyne and capturing a rebel stronghold at Morpeth in Northumberland. He besieged the rebels at Bamburgh Castle and built a castle facing the surviving one. During January 1097 in Salisbury, William was formally accused of treason, challenged to trial by battle and was defeated by Geoffrey Baynard, former High Sheriff of Yorkshire. It was finally decided that William was to be blinded and castrated.William died sometime later and was buried at Hastings. William's son Henry inherited the countship of Eu and also became Lord of Hastings.

    Marriage and children

    William married twice:

Firstly to Beatrice de Builli, daughter of Roger I de Builly (d. circa 1098/1100), feudal baron of Tickhill in Yorkshire[1] and sister and heiress of Roger II de Builli. By this first wife he had one son:

Henry I, Count of Eu, feudal baron of Hastings (d. 1140).[1]

Secondly to Helisende d'Avranches, daughter of Richard le Goz, Viscount of Avranches, and sister of Hugh d'Avranches, Earl of Chester (d. 1101).[b]

    Notes:

William de Blois (William the Simple) was Count of Blois and Count of Chartres from 1102 to 1107, and Count of Sully. He was the eldest son of Stephen-Henry, Count of Blois and Adela of Normandy, daughter of William the Conqueror and Matilda of Flanders.

He was the older brother of Theobald II, Count of Champagne, King Stephen of England and Henry, Bishop of Winchester.

William was the eldest legitimate male heir of William the Conqueror, after the death of Henry I, but he was not considered as a candidate for the English crown.

William was at first groomed to inherit the comptal throne, and was designated count shortly before his father's departure on his second crusade in 1102. Many historians believed William had a mental deficient, but this has never been substantiated. His mother found him obstreperous and unfit for wide ranging comptal duties. He did once assault and threaten to kill the Bishop of Chartres over a jurisdictional dispute. So, when her second son Theobald came of age, around 1107, Adela elevated him to the position of count of Blois-Chartres, and William retired to his wife's lands in Sully.

In 1104, William married Agnes of Sully, the heiress to the lordship of Sully-sur-Loire, a woman of admirable beauty attached to the court of William's mother. The marriage of William and Agnes was a happy one and several children were born.

    Their children included:
Margaret (c. 1105 - 1145). She married Henry, Count of Eu, Lord of Hastings, about 1122.

    Notes:

Roger de Busli (c. 1038-c. 1099) was a Norman baron who participated in the conquest of England in 1066.

Roger de Busli was born in or around 1038. His surname comes from the town now known as Bully (near Neufchâtel-en-Bray, mentioned as Buslei ar. 1060, Busli 12th century.) in Normandy, and he was likely born there. Busli was given lands in Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and the Strafforth wapentake of Yorkshire. These had previously belonged to a variety of Anglo-Saxons, including Edwin, Earl of Mercia and Rynold de Wynterwade, patriarch of the Wentworth family.

By the time of the Domesday survey de Busli was tenant-in-chief of 86 manors in Nottinghamshire, 46 in Yorkshire, and others in Derbyshire, Lincolnshire and Leicestershire, plus one in Devon. They became the Honour of Blyth (later renamed the Honour of Tickhill), and within it, de Busli erected numerous castles, at Tickhill, Kimberworth, Laughton-en-le-Morthen and Mexborough.

Much of the de Busli's family's leverage came from their familial relationships with the crown through the Counts of Eu. Roger de Busli's wife Muriel was in favour with the queen, to whom she was probably a lady-in-waiting or a kinswoman, evident in the queen's grant to de Busli of the manor of Sandford upon his marriage. The de Buslis had one son, also called Roger, who died as an infant, thus leaving no heirs. Beatrix, probably Roger's daughter (or possibly his sister), married William, Count of Eu.

De Busli died in the last years of the 11th century without an heir. His lands were given to Robert de Bellême, but de Bellême lost them in 1102 after he led a rebellion against Henry I. Ernulf de Busli, probably Roger's brother, may then have inherited some of the lands; these were then passed to his son Jordan and grandson Richard de Busli. Richard de Busli was co-founder of Roche Abbey, South Yorkshire with Richard FitzTurgis in 1147.

The male line of the de Busli family ran out in 1213, and the de Busli family holdings passed into the family of Vipont through the marriage of Idonea de Busli with Robert de Vipont (Vieuxpont).

Roger married Chappell, Muriel. Muriel (daughter of Chappel, Eudo and de Conteville, Muriel) was born in 1040 in Somerset, England; died in 1123. [Group Sheet] [Family Chart]

"This Gersende / Gundrade is said to be the mother of Etienne II de Blois, who marries Adèle de Normandie (Adèle de Blois), daughter of William the Conqueror, hence the succession of the Counts of Champagne, Blois and Sancerre, as well as the lords of Sully (and the kings of England during the reign of Stephen). However this thesis is controversial, because the reason for the repudiation of Gersende in 1048 seems to be the fact that she did not give a 'child to her husband. Étienne II de Blois, according to this hypothesis, would therefore rather come from the second marriage of Thibaud III. "
